Couldn't Fus Ro Dah salmon!

Post » Wed Jul 29, 2015 8:47 am

Hi all,

I haven't played a dragon born in a long while but am doing one now. I remembered all the discussions about how you can Fus Ro Dah jumping salmon in the rapids so I decided to give it a try, but it didn't work. I was at the rapids upstream from Riverwood and the fish were jumping. Tried for a while with no success - did I misunderstand? Can this be done? If so, any tips?

Thanks much!

AFAIK, most shouts will get then to die and they'll get carried off the stream. Full unrelenting force is overkill lol, just use fus.

Tried, just Fus, killed them, but salmon roe floats downstream so damn fast I can never get it. I stick to standing in the stream auto running where they jump and trying to catch them. An "art" this fishing thing is! :P

want the technical reason?

if not, don't read on :-)

salmon aren't actual creatures, like, say, a mudcrab or a rabbit.

a whole salmon swarm is one object with a script that controls what the single fish do

so, to fus-ro-da them, you'd have to hit that whole object, which you can't since it has no overall collision.

if you're really bored, you could check if it works with butterflies (they're something in between), i'm curious now :-)

I just use the Flame spell and then ride the river down to collect bodies and row. Sometimes, I'll find them as far down stream as the bridge by at the crossroad just east of Whiterun.

I always use Fus on butterflies. They like to stay just out of reach the lil buggers!

I did want to know, thanks! So it doesn't look like you can Fus salmon jumping in the rapids (not in the vanilla game) because there are always several and you can only see one, maybe two, at a time. That's kind of a relief, would have been overpowered if you could just clean out rapids with a single shout.

Now, I wonder what people were talking about - I think collecting salmon roe is entirely different in the PC game. You can't collect roe from salmon in the fishery in the vanilla game, only salmon meat but I don't believe that's the case in the PC version.

I may try butterflies or dragonflies out of curiosity. Not playing an alchemist so no real reason to be so destructive.

Hmmm iirc there have been numerous discussions about salmon since the inception/addition of them into the game. I believe you can harvest them via shout with a console game (would need to manually dig up old threads as the search function doesn't work). Also, salmon roe can be harvested from the hatchery according some folks if you shoot the salmon with an arrow. Never tried that myself, so that would be a new experiment. I have never had to use a mod get salmon roe to drop from a jumping salmon that I Fus'd. What I have noticed is the salmon and the roe float separately down stream. That is, you don't have to harvest it from the dead fishy! Now that you've re-ignited this fishing frenzy I will have to go and see for myself. :D

I guarantee that you cannot harvest roe from salmon in the fishery on a console by shooting them with an arrow. I've participated in any discussion that addressed this and tried everything suggested (except the shout, hence this thread).

So you've successfully shouted the salmon in the rapids and gotten roe? Seems counter to the following...

this was just why they (the single fish) can't be shout-pushed away. it doesn't necessarily exclude anything else though, like hitting them with weapons etc, and it does not mean they won't _get_ that they've been hit (by a shout or whatever) and react to that in whatever kind of ways, just that they can't be pushed by it like a single object would.

Well I don't have a console, so I cannot definitively prove whether that is the case or not. I have a new character and I will reconfirm the shouting of salmon to see if it works (PC of course, but no mods to make it work). Shouting is shouting so it shouldn't matter what the platform, but who knows these days. As I said in my post I have never tried the arrow in the fish hatchery scenario, but I will make a point of it once I get Windstad Manor up and running; if only to prove it to myself. Cheers!

Odd thing is I had it worked for me and I'm on the X360. Never tried shout or magic, but sniping them with arrows does work. Way I done it is go out as far as I can (without going to swimming mode), use sneak (you will know you are doing this part right that that the effects is like your under water, but not drowning, yet have the sneak icon), and (forgive me it's been awhile since I've done it) you want to aim either above or below the fish. It does take a lot of practice, but you do end up killing it. When you go to grab it, you'll notice there is no highlight (meaning 'take salmon' is not shown), but you can take it and the game's highlight in the upper left corner of your screen will register salmon meat and salmon roe. Check inventory and sure enough salmon roe is in there.
