Skyrim crashing like crazy while playing

Post » Mon Aug 03, 2015 5:52 pm

Hello. Recently my game started to crash too often while playing after finishing the mission for the Jarl of Whiterun when you need to kill the Dragon. I joined the companions and started to do the first quest, and every time I go out with the horse after a while my game crashes to desktop. I only got the HIGH RES DLC, mods that I doubt that can make my game CTD because I take care of my load order very carefuly. I installed after the HD DLC the mod Skyrim 2K HD lite. Uninstalled it believing that was the problem for "overloading" the vram, but even without it still CTD.

To give more inforamtion: Sometimes the screen freezes for like a minute and a half, maybe two, then it returns to normal, then after a while the game crashes.

Also, sometimes while traveling, all objects start popping out infront of me (mountains, signs, npcs, grass) at the same time instead of the normal draw distance process, and stutters like crazy for a few seconds, return to normal then crash.

Is there any way to know what may be causing this issue? I just can't play like this,

Please post a Dxdiag in spoiler tags. You should go ahead and post your load order as well.

Are you monitoring your CPU and GPU temperatures?

Good program for temperature monitoring. Download the ENglish setup not the zip unless you are comfortable with zip files.

In my experience, a 1GB vidcard should not run the high-def textures which require a stout rig with brawny vidcard.
(At least GTX760 w/ 2GB GDDR5, and a quad-core CPU.)
You want to aim at 60 FPS average, with minimums not below 50 FPS.
A nice, high, fast, fluid framerate!
30 FPS minimums are not going to cut it...
And 30 FPS average is beneath contempt.
Many people are playing a game way dragged down by ridiculous settings and are faced by what you describe.
Simply reducing graphics settings, turning off AA, and running default textures can increase their frames to above 60 FPS.
Making the gameplay fun and enjoyable once again.

Ordered with Loot then reordered manually following the descriptions of some of those mod authors (because if not, I get CDT just when the game logo appears). I really don't know the temperatures, I will watch them using the tool jasper1979 mentioned (thanks for that aswell).
Looking further, I noticed I had my random encounters setting pretty high, with a multiplayer of 3, so when 5 hostile npcs spawned, they were multiplied and instead of 5, there were 15! even worse if a second faction spawned fighting them. I turned it down to default. I have to mention, I used to play with this mod in my old computer and used the same on my list (except for Immersive Citizens) and never had this problem.

Thanks for the advice. I have 2GB of VRAM (my old computer had 1, and when I used many mods that added high res textures they turned purple). I play normally at 40fps with peaks of 32-30 (outside). Playing in interiors I get a stable 60fps gameplay. I also read about memory allocation, and started to use SSME at the default settings (gopher has a great video explaining it). Again, I used to use SSME in my old computer, and never had the problem I am talking about. I just hope the problem was the configuration of the mod I described before. What do you guys think?

Ohhhh I forgot, I also changed the uExterior Cell Buffer= to 108 (watched it somewhere). I think that may be the thing. Whats the default value?

While changing uGridsToLoad is tempting for you, you should experiment with any uGridsToLoad value in various areas, particularly those where you usually experience the lowest FPS.

The default of 5 is already a good compromise of performance and image quality.

Aside from lowering performance and causing potential instability, due to the greatly increased resource usage when raising uGridsToLoad,

if you save a game after you have altered this value, the new value will be incorporated into your saved game. !!!

----------

uGridsToLoad: This variable does not exist and need to be added to bottom of the [General] section of the Skyrim.ini file.

It controls the radius around the character within which the engine loads up the most detailed objects, characters and terrain.

Any value assigned to uGridsToLoad needs to be in odd increments, (3, 5, 7, 9, 11...)

And that's your problem with yours uExterior Cell Buffer value.

At first, uExterior Cell Buffer controls the number of world cells (controlled by the uGridsToLoad setting) that are buffered to RAM to provide smoother transitions and improve stability.

The general rule for the optimal value to assign to this, is to take your current uGridsToLoad value, add one to it, then multiply it by itself.

*uExterior Cell Buffer = (uGridsToLoad +1)2

That means, if you have uGridsToLoad to 7, uExterior Cell Buffer should be 64.

*According to the above: 64 = (7+1)2 or (64 ) -1 = 7

In your case (108 ) -1 = 9.39 Do yu remember the above: uGridsToLoad needs to be in odd increments, (3, 5, 7, 9, 11...) - so, something went deeply wrong here !!!

Thank you very much for this very detailed information. It totally makes sense. I got to say, I never added the uGridsToLoad line to the Skyrim.ini, just changed the uExterior Cell Buffer from 36 to 108 (read somewhere in the internet that it was "better"), I guess I was wrong to do it. Can I go back from the 108 to 36 again and see that change in game? Now I know the uGridsToLoad value stays forever in the save once you save it, but what about the uExterior Cell Buffer?

Revert your uExterior Cell Buffer to 36 - and then:

To revert a change in uGridsToLoad, in an existing save game follow the steps below:

  • Start Skyrim and load up a saved game.
  • Use ALT+TAB to switch out of Skyrim and back to your Desktop.
  • Edit the Skyrim.ini file as normal, modifying the uGridsToLoad variable to the desired lower value. Save Skyrim.ini and close it.
  • Use ALT+TAB to switch back to Skyrim.
  • Open the Command Console using the tilde ~ key and type refreshini.
  • Save your game to a new save slot, and it should now have the correct new uGridsToLoad value.

------

Also what GPU do you have ???

The GT 740 comes with up to 2GB of ram also, (and slower DDR3 memory modules) but is quite weak for Skyrim.

And not to forget the CPU. A decent CPU is more than recommended for Skyrim and for proper cooperation between CPU & GPU.

I play on an ASUS laptop (I know my limits) I am not going crazy with ENB's and loads of texture mods for thar reason. Got a geforce720m with 2gb of vram. I just changed the value from 108 to 36 again and is seems to be working well as always for now. About the uGridsToLoad: I NEVER added that line, that line does not even apear in my skyrim.ini. I only changed the value in the exterior cel buffer line. Is it still necessary to add it and change it if I never added it in the first place?

NOPE.

---------

Also your GT720m is nothing special. I am wondering, if all those mods causing your laptop to crash.

If you believe those *guys, Skyrim is playable at lower resolutions - and i ensure you those numbers, are without the High Resolution texture pack and no mods at all. !!!

So, at the end - it doesn't matter if you have a perfect mod load order, but it does matter that your machine obviously can't handle all those mods...

*http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-720M.90247.0.html (just scroll down to the Game Benchmarks section, and see what your laptop is capable off)

On skyrim the higher frame-rates are archived with an i7 mobile processor. (just click on a frame-rate value)

Thanks again for the info. Setting the value to 36 again did the trick. I play Skyrim with all those mods at 1280*720 and it runs at 40fps outside and at a stable 60fps in the insides. Been playing like that in this system for about half a year now until I reinstalled it and changed that value in the ini file. I know I have to build myself a good gaming rig. Will work on it. Thanks again.
