Irrational loves

Post » Tue Aug 04, 2015 7:14 am

I was so excited today: I found a replica, in faux leather, of a £1,800 backpack for just £26 on some Asian trading site (well reviewed, so I expect good service).

I was indecently excited by this: such a beautiful bag! So cheap! So rare!

(The replica had no logos, so was more a "homage" than direct copy.)

Nobody else quite "gets" it, as far as I can tell. As far as I'm concerned, the "reward" centre of my brain gets hit multiple times with one transaction:
- The pleasure of finding the "bargain"
- The pleasure of buying the good
- The pleasure of receiving it
- The pleasure of locking it away in a cupboard until I have "earned" it, and then presenting myself with the prize

Does anyone else have such an irrational relationship with a material good?
Did anyone else make a bargain with themselves? I spoke to a colleague earlier who said she'd get a tattoo if she reached her goal weight - does anyone else have an if-then-else relationship with a promised reward?

I have a figurine of some type of demon lady with a mean looking weapon. I absolutely love it.

Buying expensive things for cheap usually does it.

When I buy a new vinyl record, it always takes me at least a week before I'll listen to it.
I can hear it on iTunes and YouTube instead, but I like to see it just sit on my shelf being awesome for awhile before I find the perfect hour I can just sit back and let the needle drop on that perfect virgin vinyl.

Yeah, irrational love for books with hardcover and glossy paper, artbooks in particular. I kinda like to touch them and smell them and the more they have some cool emboss/deboss/hologram tricks on the cover the more I have to have them, regardless what game, movie or artist is featured inside.

That reminds me, I have a really nice leather bound copy of Lord of the Rings with some type of really nice thick paper with a cloth bookmark sewn in. I love it.

Apparently my housemate just doesn't get the appeal of Laser Discs, what exactly about a 12" double-sided CD is their not to love? Especially not 200 of them!

I collect what would be considered old junk from before the 1950s

It's sometimes called junk because most of it was used and so it's not in pristine condition, but I personally love it because:

1: it's a lot cheaper than buying actual vintage things :P (when I'm rich and famous I'll do that)
2: the fact that something got use makes the item more sentimental for me

I have all kinds of stuff, a bottle of Bubble-Up from 1968, a function radio from 1934 (refurbished in 1988), a wallet from the early 1900s, an Officer's coat for the US army from WWII the list goes on

You have a picture of that officer's coat you'd be willing to share?

I love trains. Ever since I was a kid I've been obsessed with them and train-related materials/paraphernalia. I have a old antique train signal lantern hanging in my house right now.

I enjoy old well-worn library books too for some reason.

You'd love it where I was from, had a historic steam railway all over the moors and the National Railway Museum right by.

I got my first smartphone recently - a second hand Galaxy S2 - originally to use the camera with my microscope, but have become completely obsessed with all the amazing synthesizer apps that are available plus the virtual musical instruments like Oud, Tabla, Guzheng and a whole plethora of Korean instruments that I'd never heard of. They sound amazing expecially played through the hi-fi. What's more, nearly all of them are completely free! Except I'm probably going to end up buying all the extra presets for Caustic 3...

I have a PS2 Midway games disc. This contains arcade games, and their development histories. There is a game called Klax which I enjoy playing.

I also have a favourite record store, and like to pick out CD's at random. They are ideally artists I never heard of before. I base the selection on

the picture on the front of the CD. I'm for aeroplanes and other forms of transport, for example i picked up a CD the cover of which had a picture

of an ice cream van. The CD was so-so but the picture was quite unusual.
