Higher FPS using Intel 4600 than 870m

Post » Wed Aug 12, 2015 5:23 am

I've just installed Morrowind on my new laptop and after applying MCP/exeopt/4gb patch I ran the game and it's all fairly smooth 60-80fps after getting 'duties' but before speaking to Fargoth. I noticed that my discrete card wasn't being used (LED feature on MSI laptops), so saved/exited and went to force the adapter use in the nVidia control panel (not uncommon with older games+Optimus) and relaunched. The discrete 870m is giving me 30-50fps just walking around Seyda Neen, which is quite the decrease. I havn't added anything except what's mentioned, and I'm not even using FPSoptimizer yet.

That's a little strange?

Windows 7

2048x1536 resolution

EDIT:

Just grabbed FPS Optimizer and I'm getting the same behaviour (though lower FPS in general) on 1920x1080 and extended view distance at max. Morrowind's technical shortcomings have always been a little bit annoying, but there's no reason for the integrated HD4600 to be running it better???

EDIT2:

Started using MGE XE and generated distant lands, added shaders, AA, AF... And *now* the HD4600 is choking at 5-10fps while the 870m gets 25-40fps. It's concerning though if with mostly vanilla settings it was being out-performed by the integrated card is my performance still taking a hit? ...

..

EDIT3:

Honestly I'm just lost.

I'm no software expert, but this all seems normal.
Morrowind is not designed for modern PCs, and was never meant to be displayed at high resolutions with all the fancy stuff of MGE.

Anything above 25 fps is considered decent, and usually comfortably playable.

I suppose I'm a bit late. My concern was the integrated Intel HD4600 was performing *better* than the higher powered discrete GPU... But it's all moot now.. I sent a request to delete this thread, as it's functioning fine, it was just extremely odd.

There seems to be no self-delete feature on this forum, could this just all be removed?

Thanks

Locked at OP's request.

And sorry if I missed your initial question. Seems like you got it sorted anyways.
