[WIPz] Let it Glow

Post » Thu Sep 10, 2015 6:07 am

Let me start with saying that I like glowy things. Morrowind doesn't have any glowy things, even though it would have made sense for a lot of items (sometimes even supposed to glow).

Let it Glow tries to add glow maps to Morrowind meshes where a subtle glow effect would be fitting. The mod is made with a vanilla installation in mind, so if you use a lot of mods this probably isn't for you (or maybe it is, that's why I'm dividing it into modules).

The mod will come in different modules so you can choose what you want to replace.

The modules are:

-Equipment (Daedric, Glass, Stalhrim, Artifacts)

-Alchemy/Flora

-Creatures

-Architecture

-Misc

So if you just want glowing equipment for example, you can just get glowing equipment.

For this mod to work I have to edit a lot of vanilla meshes to support the glow maps. This is also a reason why a vanilla installation is highly recommended (depending on the modules even required). The mod WILL support Better Morrowind Armor, though.

Here are a few example screenshots:

As you can see the effect is relatively subtle on most items, but that's what I'm going for. It should complement the vanilla design, not change it. I also understand that not a lot of people like this sort of thing, but that's fine. I'm mostly doing this for myself, but wanted to share it after release.

Oooo! Awesome, I like adding glow to Morrowind. Though, I must admit, to me at least, and this really is just my opinion, but glowing vanilla glass armor no longer really looks like glass. I think it looks like plastic, which doesn't really fit in to the Morrowind setting to me! But yeah, that is just my opinion.

Looking forward to the mod!

I figured some people wouldn't like it. I think I'm just going to divide the equipment plugin further into the seperate materials. That means you can choose if you want the glass armor or not.

Oh that would be nice! Much easier than having to pick out the glass files. Though, then again I might just end up using them anyway. Hard to really say at this point. But I do like that your making it easy to pick and choose.

Trying to decide if I totally like the pun or if it's completely horrid. :D

I'm leaning more towards completely horrible.

Speaking of which: http://i.imgur.com/cAxlQu7.jpg the Stalhrim Longsword. Again, the effect is quite subtle, but I was going for something akin to the Stalhrim in Skyrim.

you can darken up the glow map to make the glass not glow so brightly, that might make it look a little less like plastic. Adding normal, and specular maps might help also take some of the plastic look away. I would also add a slight amount of transparency to the crystals on the glass armor, along with the Globe on the Staff of Magnus, Stalhrim, and Keening.

That may also help with the plastic effect too.

Otherwise I agree that all of those things should have slight glow mapping to them.

Yes, I am going to make glass transparent in the final release, Stalhrim probably not as there will be problems with the amor and I don't want to make it inconsistent.

I will of course tweak all of the glow maps to make them more subtle. Normal and specular maps are bit out of the scope of this mod. If I am going to add them, only once OpenMW is out.

There is Ghostnull's glowing http://mw.modhistory.com/download-98-6132 and http://mw.modhistory.com/download-98-6866, which I like. But I like the effect on starlhim, keening and the artifacts. Looking forward to seeing it in-game.

I'm planning on doing the daedric armor and weapons, too. The effect will be similar, but probably a bit more subdued.

I forgot to mention that a detail map might help out with any plastic looking results to the glow mapping too. Though if you are going to forgo the normal, and specular maps you'll probably forgo a detail map again.

I darkened the glow maps and added transparencies. I think it looks a lot better now. Here are the results:

The glass armor looks better indeed. I suppose it's not possible to make it glow in the dark, but not in daylight ?

Sadly that's not possible. The effect is much more intense in the dark than in broad daylight, though
