Soul Gems: Grand - Black vs White

Post » Thu Sep 10, 2015 11:34 pm

Are Mammoths the only white grand soul? According to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Souls, they are. But... that can't be right! All the Draugr and Dragon Priests are black grands, aren't they?

The reason I ask is that I am building Heljrachen Hall. Will I have to either:

1) Buy a filled Grand soul gem, or

2) Kill a mammoth and lose my "Voice of the Sky"?

It's not that I do not have the cash. Buying one would be a simple matter. But it seems almost like a cash shop where one item needed for building one's home is very rare, as in only one way to obtain without outright buying it.

And I think that a filled Black soul gem will not work for building the Enchanter's Table.

Just curious and I do trust UESP. It just struck me as strange.

I get white souls of various sizes from draugr all the time. My elf is perma capped at level 30 so the draugr death lords she faces have greater souls. My understanding however is that when encountered at level 40 or higher, the death lords have grand white souls. She would never kill a mammoth and, being capped at level 30, she just buys grand soul gems when needed for enchanting. She avoids black soul gems - won't even pick them up.

Edit: Oh, and I guess the high level Falmer have grands.

At any rate, both draugr and Falmer have white souls since my elf captures them (in various sizes) with normal soul gems all the time.

There are other white grand souls, as Acadian notes high level Falmer as well as Draugr Death Lords at high enough levels.

And you CAN use a black soul gem for creating the Enchanter's Table, I have before ("If you have the aptitude, you should check out the College of Winterhold" ... yeah, buddy? Think I have the aptitude now? Huh? :D )

if you have Dawnguard done and it fits your roleplay, you could always try visiting the Soul Cairn. activating the Soul Fissures located throughout should fill the largest gem in your inventory, allowing you to get filled gems cheap and without the need for soul trap..

Ah! My bad as I assumed those beings counted as "human-like" and were black souls! Thanks for the tips

[EDIT]

Thanks for that tip bunny! (I forgot all about the fissures there  ) I have not gone to the soul cairn yet, so will keep that in mind.
