Archiving forum threads

Post » Mon Sep 14, 2015 9:13 am

So it is not a secret that this forum will soon be relocated. The old forum will be around for a while (at least this is what people say, I actually haven't seen any official comment on this), but not forever. And such wonderful service as Wayback Machine doesn't always procure needed information. Moreover, it is blocked by government in some parts of the world, like in my beloved country.

I propose that we locate the most informative and helpful threads on this and Construction Set subforums and post the links to them here. Then they can be copied to the http://wiki.theassimilationlab.com/mmw/Main_Page or elsewhere. Previously we had ES forum archive, created by Yacoby for these purposes, but it is no longer functioning.

Here is how I copied AnOldFriend's "Morrowind Bump and Reflection Mapping Tips and Tricks" thread, for example: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1104120-tips-and-tricks-for-bump-and-reflection-mapping/?p=16156476, http://wiki.theassimilationlab.com/mmw/Bump_and_Reflection_Mapping. Obviously it is a lot harder to copy threads this way, but much more convenient for readers. Some sort of automatic method may be employed, like what Yacoby did (I guess he didn't type all that, given the amount of material that was available there  ).

Anyway, this thread may also serve for navigation purposes in this subforum, while it still functions. I will regulary upadate this post.

For now, here's a couple threads which Papill6n recommended in Morrowind Modding Wiki http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1504605-morrowind-modding-wiki/:

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/805977-detail-maps/?p=11719394

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1505162-collisionless-water-flora/

P.S.: here is http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1534860-the-great-archive-effort/ in the lore subforum. And http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1533362-bethesdanet-update-%E2%80%93-username-registration-soon/ is the discussion about forum relocation.

Same thing happened September 1st 2004 when this forum started over from scratch and a bunch of stuff was copied from the old forums and posted here, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/195-how-to-get-redguard-working-under-windows-xp/, I see no reason why it can't happen again. That is, copy stuff from here and post on the new forums. This forum will still be up for many months, so there's plenty of time.

That said, this is a good thread to discuss what Morrowind Mods/CS threads that needs to be saved.

Copying the important threads to the new forum would be excellent solution! So, let's have a good look to see what has to be preserved!

Feel free to copy any useful thread at TAL then as soon the new forum is up anyone can post a thread with useful links back to TAL. This also might help you a bit to add tutorials to the Morrowind Modding wiki instead of copying it over to the wiki.

You can also use http://www.theassimilationlab.com/forums/topic/14196-morrowind-modding-wiki/ thread for this purpose or start new thread(s) in the same forum based on what it's all about e.g CS related discussions, Mod related discussions.

Remember you don't need to qoute a post instead just select it then right click and copy everything, and I mean everything will be copied over e.g formats, color, links etc, provided you copy between forums that has the same forum software.

I think the modding wiki has captured a lot of good threads and guides. I've already saved the OP for all my threads and will decide what should be recreated on the new forums (like my Uniformity Mods List). I can't think of anything else off the top of my head which needs to be saved for this forum - but I'm sure others will have some ideas.
