Attaching a Mesh to the 1st person Camera?

Post » Fri Sep 18, 2015 12:20 am

I'm trying to create an on-screen 'vein' effect that will play during certain occasions in my Mod. From experimenting, I've determined that using a 'VisualEffect' (like what you get with Rain or Snow) isn't really going to work, since whilst it plays, the moment the PC moves it starts flickering in and out of existence.

What I've been trying to do is make an armour-piece that is basically a 'billboard' with the effect on it. This works perfectly on the Left-Right axis, and will stay centred; but on the Up-Down axis, it doesn't move relative to the camera, so you see over the top of it, and under the bottom, ruining the effect.

I've looked at Scrivener's 'Helmet Overlays', which is a really cool Mod, but I think from the way I want to do things that method wouldn't really be suitable for me.

So what I really want to try and do is find a way to attach the Mesh to the 1st Person Camera directly, so that as the camera turns the mesh relocates relative to it; but nothing I am doing is working. Does anyone have any idea how I might do this?

Pick apart the system that's used for attaching the "Scroll Vision" thingy when you read the Elder Scroll to get Dragonrend.

Oh, thanks for the suggestion :D I'd forgotten about that... :D

Edit:

Nope, no luck :( The Elder Scroll applies a Visual Effect like the others, and actually disables the Player's movement controls it seems--probably to stop the same effect I'm getting of it flickering when you move :/ Was worth a try, though :/

There should be no reason a visual effect flickers .... rain and snow don't flicker. So it may be something in how you created the mesh itself, or the texture. If you want to share it I can take a look.

If you can also share how to call the effect in game so I can test it, that would help (I know how to create it in the CK).

Ooh! This is something I want to do. Never did get around to looking at it. I'd like to be able to restrict the player's field of vision under certain circumstances. Like a great-helm with a letterbox viewport. You could take it off and lose the benefit or put it on and have your vision restricted to a narrow rectangle.

I think I could probably use imagespace mods to reduce the visible area to a central circle, but it would be nice to have more shapes to play with.

...reads second half of OP ...

"Helmet overlays", hmm? Interesting.

[edity edit]

That looks interesting. Sorry, I appear to have less to contribute to this discussion than I thought.
