[WIPZ] Old Hroldan

Post » Tue Sep 22, 2015 2:11 pm

'Ah, a visitor! Old Hroldan has hundreds of years of history friend!'

This mod was previously released as one of my http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198052871752/myworkshopfiles/, but I removed it when I decided to add a town to the mix. What this is, is a revamp of Old Hroldan Inn and the addition of Old Hroldan town.

The Inn:

The inn has a lot of history and has been around for a very long time, so I needed it to reflect that. I exchanged the exterior for a much larger one and revamped the interior completely. I think it has a far more 'ancient' atmosphere now with it's dark wood walls and heavy beams. Tiber Septim's room is now more fitting with it's upper class bed and large furniture. It also now has a balcony off it, that has a view over the town and towards the mountains.

I retextured the inn meshes on SMIM meshes. (with permission from the author of that incredible mod of course) They now look MUCH crisper and better then the original release. Though you can't really tell in the screenshots below.

I added a full kitchen to make the inn, an actual 'inn' and secrets that relate to it's dark past.

The Town:

The town is a 14 building town, at least for it's initial release. In the second version I plan to possibly double that. But for now the town has:

A Town Hall

A general store

An alchemy Store

A clothing store

A bakery

A complete library

Town square merchants for fresh produce and weapons selling.

8 NPC homes

A VERY unique player house with some special features that I will not reveal just yet. I will reveal that it has a kitchen just like my Hearthfire kitchens (and then some...) It also has a full forge, alchemy room, quarters for companions and a bathing area.

The Plan for Version 1 Release:

I have some quests in mind, however right now I need to get this mod released. I have had it going for two years now off and on. So I doubt the first release will have much in the way of quests. What it will have is a fully complete town with many facilities and I hope *cross fingers* LOTS of character and many secrets.

The first release will have at least some NPCs voice acted, I already have that underway, even having a go at voice acting myself. *snicker* But I will probably be asking for voice actors shortly, just got to get my dialog in order for the characters of this town.

Lore:

Old Hroldan has a history and it is very important to me to have my town fit in and even expand that history. So....when Eydis (owner of the Inn) says Old Hroldan is haunted by it's past....so is the town. In addition to this, the town is home to some characters with interesting backgrounds, that I hope blend in with TES lore. As the town is not Nord-centric, it has become a haven for quite a few other races who are not welcome in most places in Skyrim.

Progress:

Retexturing 100% complete

Interiors 100% complete

Exteriors 100% complete

Navmeshing 100% complete (no deleted navmeshes *phew*)

Special features/events 100% complete (unless I get inspiration for more, which often happens)

Still working on my NPCs and their personalities.

Pictures:

Sorry I just don't release images showing the town layout. I would rather the players discover that on release. Just a quirk I adopted when making my towns for Oblivion, as I tend to loose motivation if I reveal it all before release.

Anyway, I started this thread because it is likely I will be asking questions, opinions, advice on this or that. So best to have one thread where everyone knows what I am talking about.

Will you have a version on Nexus? I don't DL from Steam anymore.

I use all your unique taverns and presently a very dull Old Hroldan village mod; looking forward to this immensely.

It will be great to see a town with the flavour of the lore "old Reach" that was populated, pacified, and cosmopolitan, rather than the fearful oppression we got in Skyrim.

I know you don't want to give it away past the number of buildings, but how "big" is it, roughly? Does it stay around the inn and bridge or snake north towards the shrine and moonstone mine?

Yes.

Oops! Completely forgot the Library picture. Added that to the rest of the pictures.

I think with the library I would like to add in a bunch of Morrowind books from that game, I think that is okay to do legally. They could have been donated by Nasdren, my old Dunmer Morrowind refugee who lives with his Argonian servant, who refuses to be freed (I passed this idea by the folks on the Lore forums). Nasdren misses his homeland and his house reflects that with paintings and books. I harassed the folks on the Morrowind forums last year for pictures that I could turn into paintings for Nasdren's house and they provided some awesome ones that make me homesick for Morrowind. lol

The town is definitely very unique in Skyrim, http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n99/Shezrie/Old%20Hroldan/ScreenShot163_zpsd9da78fb.jpg through this. Like the medieval town I live in IRL. But it does blend in nicely with the inn and not stick out like a sore thumb. It sits across the road from the inn, on a plateau. You walk up the road from the town to the inn, but luckily there is now more then one way to get to the inn :ninja: .

In the planned expansion I hope to add on down towards the river at the bottom of the cliff and also to incorporate the inn into the town more. If I run out of space I will have to do what I did in my Oblivion Pell's Gate town and built upper level streets and underground ones as well. But I will wait to see how it goes on that one.

It's surprisingly spacious, yet 'cosy'. :D

Currently working on a very strange issue with Skuli in the Old Hroldan Inn suddenly saying he is an orphan. I had this issue with my Unique Taverns Winterhold version, the kid there was suddenly acting like an orphan even though I haven't touched those NPCs. I don't alter the vanilla NPCs.

Someone told me how to fix this for that Winterhold mod and it was a really simply fix, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. So if anyone is familiar with that issue and knows the fix please let me know.

Mildly off-topic, did you manage to track down the phantom Hroldan edits in Unique Four Shields Tavern? I just deleted the floating door in TES5EDIT and was wondering if there's anything else I need to clean.

According to the data with Hearthfire loaded (only way he'll complain about being orphaned) Eydis is linked as his mother and Leontius is linked as a guardian since he has no actual father.

The only way he SHOULD be going on about being orphaned is if they're both dead.

I'd check to be sure he's not somehow in BYOHRelationshipAdoptableFaction with a faction rank of 0, since those are the conditions for the orphan dialogue to run.

Is there a wall around it to keep out Thu'um targets Forsworn? Not everyone has the eminent means to... dispose of them.

IIRC, with Hearthfire clashing... the Winterhold Unique Taverns had a conflict concerning the daughter of the two inn owners and it was fixed without HF dependency using some existing keyword or somesuch. I remember pointing out the problem and the fix.

EDIT: You claim you did not touch the base NPC form for Skuli. I'd bet you did, however, handle the in-game actor ref, likely for repositioning. Looking at UT WInterhold in TES5Edit, I remember what went wrong with the little girl claiming to be orphaned when she wasn't: There were some manner of linked references to her parents done by Hearthfire and undone by the earlier versions of UT Winterhold. They were not Hearthfire-dependent IIRC. To see specific details of what to fix, load Hearthfire and your Old Hroldan mod in TES5Edit, look up Skuli's RefID (000199D0), and compare. You could probably fix it then and there in TES5Edit with a subrecord copy.

^ What he said.

The kid should have one linked reference pointing to Eydis set as LinkCustom02. The other linked reference should point to Leontius set as LinkCustom03.

If those settings are undone, HF will assume his "parents" are dead and he'd be added to the faction. Surprised he didn't end up in Riften too because the orphans get sent there when that happens.

Thanks! I remembered it being a surprisingly simple fix, but forgot that it was done in Tes5Edit.

I checked it out in Tes5Edit and couldn't find anything more there, but I will be shortly doing a more thorough search asking for help in tracking it down. Those same edits will be present in Old Hroldan. Left over from when I split Unique Taverns.

I was just thinking about that yesterday. I was imagining that I had put the song in and had the bard introduce it with...'This is a song I wrote when I was...drunk.' Thinking on it, I am not even sure I still have a copy of the song.

Unfortunately I will have to drop the idea of a Morrowind easter egg, Jobasha the Khajiit running the library. I cannot find someone to voice a male Khajiit. So I will have to make the librarian a woodelf and hope I can at least get someone to voice that. :(

I do have another Morrowind related thing in the town though, Nasdren my Dunmer refugee is voiced and all ready. He sounds awesome with his Morrowind style gravelly voice, thanks to Vulon's excellent voice acting.

Too bad, but don't worry. Maybe you can somehow slip him in, with a memorial plaque or something like that "dedicated to my dear friend jobasha" etc.

Looks fantastic!
May I venture a couple of suggestions?

1. Can you retexture the inn floor to a darker shade? I think it would really "sell" the idea of it being ancient.
2. If you haven't added in a 'smoke'/mist effect, I think it would definitely look good in that tavern.

Otherwise, looking lovely - the library is wonderful, and I can't wait to move into the player home

Very good ideas, thanks! I think you are certainly right about the light coloured floor in particular, darker would definitely make it more 'ancient'.

On a general note, progress is very good as I received my Mayor and his secretary's voice files and can set up their 5 scenes and the rest of their dialog. Although having voiced some NPCs I think I now want to go the full way and voice all major NPCs, if I could just find more voice actors.

My guards are in place and patrolling nicely in their custom armor.

Sorry, don't know how I missed this question earlier. There are no walls per se, the town is like Pell's Gate in that the houses are it's walls. The entrance is small and guarded day and night.

Have you looked at Alexander J Velickys modding discussion about getting VAs? Some of the sites he's mentioned helped get me several great VAs.
