I you are looking for the typical cut em up Samurai thing, there are tons of anime for that.

Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X is one that is pretty good. Has a lot of historical elements, although none are really done very accurately or with much attention given to realism. The swordplay starts to border on almost magical as well.

Afrosamurai has very well done fight scenes and essentially is all about the cut em up aspect of samurai. It revels in violence.

Samurai Champloo was mentioned, but it deserves another.

Honestly, there are tons of em. Just browse an anime list somewhere and see what matches up.

As for Samurai in general. Coffee and Sentinel nailed it. Bunch of thugs who originated as thugs and never forgot it. However, in the later parts of the samurai age, their behavior was purely guided by culture. They weren't really any worse than say the european knight. Albeit the knight was probably less likely to kill you for not bowing your head to him. He was more likely to just trample you to death for being in his way though. Few warrior groups, if any, are worthy of glorification. There were some good guys sprinkled in with a lot of trash in pretty much every one.

I would say lay in wait until your brain is ready for it. When you are feeling patient, pounce. As Shelly says, go for the subtitled version. Maybe you will have to wait for many years. But sometime, when you are really chilled out, you will be ready for Kurosawa.

Otherwise, maybe try a Beat Takeshi movie like "Brother". It is basically the same thing except with guns.

So far, Rurouni Kenshin. The Vagabond manga is pretty good, too, but got bored of it after a bit. I wanted to see more of the main character. Not his goofy friend.

It is strange how few samurai games there are. Shin Megami Tensei IV has samurai, but I can't call it a samurai game because they seem more like a bunch of guys just called it. Though, there are the typical jokes about Seppuku in the game if you talk to some demons. I think one asks you to commit it. The way the word is pronounced in the game seems weird at first, but I heard they are saying it correctly.

I think the reason ninja games are more common is because people think ninjas are way cooler. I suppose we could called Shinobi 3 a samurai game seeing as it certainly can't be about a ninja when he is just running around doing samurai things.
