Besides http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yule (Christmas) and New Years, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walpurgis_Night and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midsummer are two very large holidays here in Sweden. Much more so than the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Day_of_Sweden (June 6th) which isn't really celebrated that much.

As for traditions, umm, we do have a cinnamon bun day, waffle day and practically a whole season dedicated to a gooey almond paste and cream bun. Not long ago it was the http://sweden.se/culture-traditions/the-semla-more-than-just-a-bun/. We eat a lot of stuff like this, thanks to our http://sweden.se/culture-traditions/fika/ tradition.

A lot of our traditions are religious in origin like Shrove Tuesday aka Pancake Day because people used to use up all their eggs before Lent began.

A lot are more modern than often realised. Welsh and Scottish national dress, white weddings, Xmas trees all Victorian in origin.

Outside of Independence day and Thanksgiving, we pretty much borrow everyone else's holidays. :P

Get Portuguese, Spanish and Italian traditions. Mix it with heavy drinking and six. You got 70% of Brazil's tradition.

About Holidays, it varies a lot and almost all of them are religious. Catholic traditions are the other 30%. We used to care about folclore, which is simply an amazing junction of Bantu (majority of black ethnicity that was enslaved) and native american myths, but no one seems to care. In some places you do see a Carnival that carries a lot of culture like Frevo and Maracatu in Pernambuco and Bahia. Also you see a lot of traditional things from the Northeastern culture, which IMO is the only place including the south that still has its culture impacting heavily in their traditions.

About the South, well, we have snow! And a lot of German traditions plus italian ones. Although, most of the italians are in the Southeast but the cultural part stayed heavily in the south and the food stayed in Sao Paulo!. Sadly our italians made Football teams instead of Mafia  (its a joke people).

In the North you have several native cultures and the daily rains from the Amazon Rainforest dictating their traditions. But sadly our traditions are diying in the great urban areas. The countryside still having it though and if you have six with a woman in the countryside, marry her or die with a peixeira no meio do buxo, cabra safado. (A type of knife that has the size of a shortsword and perfect for cutting)

The Central region of Brazil, I don't know, it has the government D.C. and some other cities. But to be honest I know nothing about it instead it is the place that makes Frank Underwood looking like an honest politician and a good man.

I don't know what the hell went wrong in South America, better yet, Latin America. But Brazil was a prosperous Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy until some racists idiots supported by the wealthy rural lords proclaimed a republic and a few years after the U.S. beaten us economically speaking (and we went downhill to what we are today) Brazil as a Monarchy with a Parliament was perfectly fine, hell we even defied victorian England (of course, supported by Germany ) because of some drunk sailors causing trouble in Brazilian ports.

EDIT: I wrote prosperous empire but it sounded too... absolutist.

Here in the UK, alcohol is intrinsic to our very being. It's what gives us the energy for invasion :D Nearly every day, my friends and I go to the pub to watch whatever's on TV (if it's football, UGH, if it's rugby that's great) and at least once a week we go clubbing.

There's also the fish and chip butty, that's a thing of beauty to be sure. Then there's all the holidays; Christmas, Valentines Day, New Years, Pancake Day, Queen's Birthday (Few celebrate it, but we take advantage of the day off work ;))

I wish we had Thanksgiving so we could have more holiday with more turkey dinner :( I guess I could be thankful for all the Yanks buggering off fromEurope? :P

Well, to be fair we have bent them so out of shape, they probably don't want them back anyway.

Pretty soon, almost everybody here will become Irish for a day. If you talk to a visitor from Ireland at this time, he/she is likely to say, "I can't believe you people celebrate this." and then stare at the green beer you placed in front of them with distaste.

Three reasons for the distaste:

1. Americans have no idea what REAL beer is.

2. They may be from the North so green may not be their favorite color.

3. No true son or daughter from the Emerald Isle would ever dye their beer any color.

I love cultural humor! My wife, who is Filipino and myself have been making fun of each other's countries for the last 24 years.
