THIS! This Is Roleplaying!

Post » Tue Sep 22, 2015 1:25 pm

To me, anyway :)

The set up:

I watch a Twitch Stream from Geek & Sundry called Critical Role. It covers game sessions of 5th Edition D&D with voice actors. This means that they really get into their characters :)

The group's "treasurer", so to speak, is a Half-Elf Ranger named Vex'Ahlia, played by Laura Bailey. Grog (played by Travis Willingham) is a Goliath Barbarian who is not too bright. Throughout the shows, Grog observes Vex "haggling" everything, from room prices to selling loot or buying potions. He decides to give this "haggling" a try.

What he (Grog/Travis) does is pure roleplaying gold, to me. Forget game mechanics! Forget party success or failure! Enter "Character Concept", for the win :)

I haven't gotten the time to watch as much of that as I'd like, but I know from the bits I've seen that it's amazing. Hilarious and looks fun as hell.

Granted I know nothing of D&D or roleplaying in real life, I know when I used to do a little collaborative fan fiction on the forums here I really tried to get into character when writing. It's more about the story than playing a perfect character, who say isn't stupid, or is always right, never does any wrong, etc.

I haven't ever seen the show but seems like a good product. Those two at least do the voices really well.

I've seen something similar with TotalBiscuit and iNcontroL, but I think they were doing W40K?

This is funny watching normal looking folks playing. Feels like an episode of one of those 1970s celebrity game shows.

Yes, 22 episodes from over 3 hours to almost 5 hours each is a bit of a time investment :)

I took me about a month to watch all the old ones. Now I am ready to start watching them live :)

Agreed. Sometimes, the character just does not do everything right :)

Orion Acaba does the "scatterbrained" Tiberius (Dragonborn Sorcerer) really well, too, I think. Marisha Ray gets into her "awkward" Keyleth (Half-Elf Druid) character well, too. Some of the players, though, can not help but metagame, sometimes :)

That would be an interesting watch :)

It does have that feel, doesn't it? :D

Ah, I wish they did this show in podcast format, it looks exactly like the sort of actual play style that I enjoy.

It would be easy to convert the video to an mp3, if that's what you're looking for. :)

True enough, I guess I'm just lamenting that it takes some extra effort on my part to make it happen :P

I have to admit, that was pretty darn funny. I'm usually a bigger fan of modern or scifi-settings (World of Darkness, GURPS), but that makes me want to play D&D :D

I don't know much about D&D but this reminded me of one episode of The Big Bang Theory where Howard was playing the Dungeon Master. Pretty funny stuff. :)

While not specifically D&D, I think Tord's [sadly abandoned] Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/mynameisnotlilly/playlists

Shows a really good cRPG roleplayer in action; playing D&D, Wasteland, and Fallout titles.
