Fallout 3 was made with the Gamebryo engine, but I don't know about the others.

I think 1 and 2 used a proprietary engine. I'd assume the same for Tactics. I'm not sure what Brotherhood of Steel used. (As a random guess - whatever one Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath and Bard's Tale used, maybe?)

FOBOS used the same engine as Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance and recent the "The Bard's Tale".

Propriety Playstation 2 engine I think... I don't know the internal name.

Yep. I found out that BT was using that engine when I went there searching for the name of the BG:DA engine.

It's simply called the Dark Alliance Engine. Tactics used the Phoenix Engine, while FO1 and 2 used simply the Fallout engine (it does not have a separate name and was never used elsewhere).

Interestingly, three highly despised games using the same engine... even though The Bard's Tale is worth playing for its humour & voice acting alone.

You know, actually the only one of those I didn't like was FOBOS... As a sort of "Diablo-lite" I thought they were pretty good, really. Bard's Tale was especially funny, I thought. I don't know why anyone would despise Dark Alliance...

I have the PC port of the recent "The Bard's Tale", and its great in some ways (Tony Jay did a superb job).

(But I must admit, the only reason I bought it was that it shipped with the original BT 1, 2 & 3 in the box)

Gizmo, how did you like the recent BT? I was thinking about trying it out, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

For a long time I was looking forward to it. I knew it was not really related to the first three (Brian Fargo only secured the name itself, not anything else); So I didn't know what to expect.
The website was cool, and I couldn't imagine a better Bard than Cary Elwes. After playing it for about ? an hour, I found that though I liked parts of it, and liked Tony Jays, narration, most of the the audio was a bit lackluster, Cary Elwes seemed to have "phoned it in" (hardly as good as his performance in Princess Bride ~or even Mel Brook's Robinhood spoof). I found the game itself (when you got down to it) was kind of dull (even though I'd begun to progress in it). Since my purchase, I've played the three originals more than the new game (but then, that's why I bought it )

Its been sitting in a CD wallet for almost two years un-played (along with F.E.A.R. collectors ed.), but it has been my nagging intention for most of that time to pull it out, and play it again. If you can buy it for $6 bucks like I did, then you can't really go wrong with it, the PC version bundles Bard's Tale 1, 2 & 3, wrapped in an updated installer.

The game really does have its moments, but it is quite clearly a stereotypical "console game", and plays as you'd expect from hearing that. (Not that console games are bad, but when you hear the term applied to a game, its not hard to know what to expect.)

Still, I only played the first 40 minutes, so I can't really judge it fairly. I do plan to play it through (or at least give it a second chance).

I thought Bard's Tale was alright. I liked it better than Dark Alliance; which is basically the same game. Kind of a Diablo-lite, I thought. Bard's Tale was alright, though; especially if you go expected it to be pretty much that. The upgrades you could give yourself was nice. Actually, I don't think I ever finished it, though... I think I got like 3/4's of the way through and then moved on to something else.

I liked that it had a sense of humor about itself, though - like the wooden barrel manufacturer that hires to go around breaking as many barrels as you can. :)

I think it's one of those games that you play more for the humor than anything else, though. It was an alright game; and fairly well-polished, I thought. Decent production values. But the gameplay wasn't terribly original or outstanding or anything. If you want a good laugh at a game that pokes fun at a number of RPG cliches, then it's pretty good. But if you're going in expected for the actual game to stand on it's own, then for your money you're better off just renting it or playing Diablo again. :)

For a game that's trying to make fun of RPG clich?s, The Bard's Tale actually has a surprising ending.

I played Morrowind till very close to the end - some main character had to follow me and due to dodgy pathfinding and even dodgier terrain I had to redo this mission a few times and then finally got fed up and uninstalled it. Those "quests" are ridiculous.

And if you killed too many chickens in town, eventually a huge chicken would show up. :)
