Playing first games, new to turn-based system

Post » Sat Oct 31, 2015 5:43 pm

So, I recently got myself a Fallout Anthology, and I'm about to play Fallout 1.

Thing is, the genre I've always enjoyed is fast-paced FPS, which is kinda the opposite of the type of game I'm going to play.

Any tips for a newbie like myself? I don't want the experience to be frustrating.

Start by going into options and turning combat speed to full. Gives you less waiting around time for enemies to do their animations.

Thanks, that's probably going to make everything more bearable for a person like me, lol.

Just to confirm, Gifted is a trait in FO 1, so that is pretty much a must have. For my gunslinger type characters I almost always take Gifted + Finesse.

I also start with 10 agility, technically 9 + Gifted. You can increase Agility +1 through implant, but this is all done at BoS, and it takes 3 weeks. So, technically, if you wanted, you could have 9 Agility after Gifted and get it to 10 after BoS, but I don't like wasting 3 weeks and I prefer to start from the get go with maximum AP.

Also note, in FO 1 you will be lucky to get over level 18. It is possibly, but it requires farming a lot of deathclaws, which you do fairly late in the game anyway, and I mean a lot of deathclaws. Getting to 18 alone pretty much requires a lot of deathclaw farming, and again, I mean a lot. This requires killing deathclaws in the zone they are in, leaving that zone and waiting like 8 hours or so, going back and deathclaws respawn. Not 8 hours real time, you can use your pip boy to wait in time for x amount of hours. I think it is 8, I just can't remember. Could be more, could be less. You can't kill the mama deathclaw to do this iirc, once you do that, no more deathclaws spawn.

It really isn't necessary, all you really going to get is another level of Action Boy, if you do it to max level you may snag Sniper perk, too. None of it is really necessary though. Or if you want to start throwing points into Energy Weapons because you get the Turbo Plasma Rifle, that can be a good reason to farm deathclaws, too. Note, shoot and run, it isn't wise to let a deathclaw get into range to hit you.

In FO2, this is not an issue. Leveling up is easier, there are caves full of deathclaws, tons of stuff to kill in general, and EXP isn't as hard to come by compared to FO 1. Mainly because it is just a bigger game with more quests and stuff to do, and things to kill.

Also, for both games, save often in multiple save slots. There aren't too many bugs, but there are some bugs. The games can get kinda finicky around a couple quests, especially in FO 1 when dealing with the Regulators, and in FO 2 this can happen in Reno when boxing and in San Fran when kung fu fighting.

I grew up on FPS and mostly play fast-paced games myself, but I had little issue getting into the originals and even preferred them to Fallout 3.

:stare: Ain't got nothing to do with nostalgia either. I started with Fallout 3 and even playing them at the same time I preferred them.
