Working Graveyard

Post » Sun Nov 01, 2015 2:13 am

So im currently in my weekly rotation that I work 10:30pm - 6:30am. Its nice as things are a bit more easy going in the plant I work at but it svcks because I sleep most of the day and miss out on my family.

How do you guys feel about the graveyard shift?

When I could work, that was pretty much the only shift I ever worked. It left a lasting impression on me, even though I haven't worked in over a decade and I still abide by that schedule. It's frustrating but no matter how hard I try to kick it(staying up 36+ hours, getting up earlier and earlier) my body refuses to be tired until 8 in the morning, and then doesn't want to wake up until 4 in the afternoon.

Im actually more of an evening person myself. If left to my own schedule I'd be up at 10am and be up till about 2am. My schedule rotates though so it throws me all out of wack.

It was the shift I had when I first started working, at a gas station, 12-7/8. At first it was okay, I just cleaned up and I only had a handful of customers. But as time went on my body did not want to go on!

I got home at around 9, went to sleep, woke up at 11, showered, went to work. This was my schedule for a whole year, my manager gave me my days off separate, so I had to sleep in my "off" day because I'll be going to work that same day.

It came to the point where I was not resting, I only saw my parents when I got home, but I did not talk to anyone of my friends or family for months at a time. Pulled off the occasional double shifts too and had to work the next day... not fun.

It was not enjoyable. But if I had to go back into Graveyard I'll pick part time.

I prefer that type of shift when I was working.

I come from a very long line of Night Owls on my Mothers side. My mother did not have that blessing. I have no idea how far it goes back.

For working it was the best since you could get things done in the day (either in the morning or afternoon). The only downside was going out in the evening and partying unless it was your day off.

I hated the few times I actually had to work graveyard. But I loved working swing shift (say 2pm-11pm or so). I was lucky to have a job that let me switch from evenings to days once I had kids, but if I hadn't had kids I'd likely still be working swing shift. My second choice would be getting up and doing a 6am-2:30pm (or even earlier) shift if I could.

I was a correctional officer for a year, and worked Midnight to 8am. I can say without any hesitation or doubt that the graveyard shift is the worst shift in existence. I never understood how people with families were able to do it. Even with a girlfriend, you can't just lay down and go to sleep with her at night, so having a wife and kids would make that all the more depressing.

When I worked nights I worked 12 hour shifts one week then a week off.

Nice because I only had to use a weeks holiday to get 3 weeks off but during the week I was working I felt like a zombie most of the time.

I also ended up leaving that job because of depression. Just one of the many health conditions that shift workers are prone to.

I remember working a 12 hour shift from like 10pm to 10 or 11am at tnt fireworks i have no idea why but a while after the half way mark of my shift I would get this explosive energy that also boosted my mood and found myself being very helpfull to customers and introducing myself to them and asking if they needed any help I guess I become opposite me when I have been running on empty after a certain period of time.

Man, and sometimes I complain about a lack of sleep after studying. Bravo. You get things done.

"Graveyard shift" is an American idiom for overnight shift.

I have worked a few overnight jobs and completely hated it. My last one was on the overnight floor cleaning crew at a Walmart store. I would go in at 11:00 PM and was supposed to get off at 8:00 AM, though I almost never left the store before 8:30 or 9:00. I'd stay up until 1:30 or 2:00 PM, sleep until 9:30, get up and do it all over again. It's like you're in a different world; you get home when your family and friends are starting their day at work, and when they're going to bed you're just starting work yourself.

Some people actually like it - more power to them.

Don't like the sound of that. I actually prefer evenings myself, about 3 to midnight.
