Just picked up Redguard on GOG, have a few questions

So, the last time I played Redguard, I had to play it on a virtualmachine since I couldn't get it running through Dosbox or nglide. I played through a good bit of the game on the virtual machine, but I recently noticed Redguard was availible on GOG with all the Dosbox and emulation stuff already set up, so I bought it from there in hopes of a better gaming experience.

There are a couple things I'd like to do before I start playing again, one is bring my savegames over from my old install to my new one, the other is optimize the game to look/play a bit better on my computer.

For the savegames, I had to download an old version of winrar on the virtual machine and zip up the SAVEGAME folder, then brought the zip onto my host via virtual floppy. Problem is, even though I put the savegame files into my new directory, they don't appear in the menu, is there something else I need to do to get them to work?

For optimization, I'd like to increase the game's view distance as much as possible and try to get it to run in a resolution to my computer's native 1440x900, what are the ways I can do these things? I'm also interested to know how I can take screenshots/video of the game. I've never attempted to do this with a game running through dosbox so I wasn't sure if there was anything I needed to know. I have playclaw which I use for recording clips of most of my games but if there's another way I should record/take screenshots then please let me know!

Thanks in advance everyone! I'm very exited to start playing Redguard again, it's art style and writing are fantastic, truly. One of my favourite TES games (besides Morrowind). :)

CTRL+F5 is the DOSBox shortcut key to save screenshots. They get saved in the "DOSBox\capture" folder, wherever the game is located. I don't think you'll be able to increase the viewsize to your monitor's native resolution. DOSBox simulates a near authentic DOS environment so the game thinks it's running in real DOS. There are no video drivers for DOS games that allow resolutions of that size and aspect ratio. You're stuck with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a max resolution of 640x480 or possibly 800x600. I'd be surprised to see it support 1024x768 or higher. If it did, you'd need a pretty powerful PC for DOSBox to emulate a whole system environment to be able to play at those resolutions without a hitch.

Also, unless you use a custom build of DOSBox (like Daum for instance) you'll have no hardware graphics rendering and you'll be stuck in software mode only as the version of DOSBox that comes with the GOG packages doesn't emulate glide or 3d rendering of any kind.

That's odd, sure you put them into the right place? Redguard\Redguard\SAVEGAME\SAVEGAME.001\ and so on.

And don't install the game into C:\Program Files\, but instead something like C:\Games\Redguard, since newer Windowses doesn't like programs that want to change stuff in C:\Program Files\

There is no way to increase the viewing distance in Redguard that I'm aware of.

Eh, that's too bad. I've seen people run the game in 1080p but I guess they must have used something other than DOSbox. Unfortunately DOSbox and Virtualbox are the only ways I've managed to get the game running so I guess I'll svck it up. Thanks for letting me know the screenshot shortcut.

Yep. That's where I put them. Is there a .cfg file I need to change or something to make the game recognize they're in there?
It's installed in C:\Bethesda\Redguard, so I think I should be good. :)

That's too bad. Any way to decrease or disable the render fog? I just want to be able to take better screenshots.
