Fallout 4 for PC available without Steam?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 4:07 pm

You do this with Steam. I can understand doing this with a bank, but I cannot understand doing this with 3rd party APPs on one's desktop or phone.

**And "Hacked" is simply [or not so simply] using what's possible in an unintended, and/or unwelcome fashion. It doesn't always need code injection. I recall one fellow whose laptop was locked and erased remotely, because of an overlapp in the information that Apple and Amazon required to reclaim one's accounts... and it was possible to get the information from one to give to the other... They did this, and changed his passwords.

Hey, man. I suppose it really just boils down to me simply not thinking that Steam will get hacked. It is in their best interests not to let that happen (not like that's ever saved anybody before). And besides, the amount of stuff you miss out on by not using Steam is insane. I don't have a lot of money, so I pretty much only ever pick up games in one of Steam's many, many sales. It's hard to pass up 75-90% off.

The IRS thing, though. It didn't even involve computer systems really, so I don't think it can even be considered a hack. After all, this kind of thing happens thousands of times every year. This year it was simply a whole freaking BUNCH of times which caught everyone's attention.

So, in short, I am perfectly fine with FO4 using Steam as DRM. I expected nothing else.

I've also not had an STD, and I understand that they are bad.. :)

Steam hardware survey, wow... definitely NOT allowing that. Thx for the heads-up.

Not getting personally involved with companies who have no business snooping into your life isn't that hard if you pay attention to it, and give it some prioroity. It's far from a given.

It's true that getting a different IP address is the best thing to do but that is easy these days, especially with all the mobile junk around now.

Calling me ridiculous for not liking Steam is childish and does not help your cause. I′m not out to hurt Steam in any way, I am simply making a point. By not using it I′m not contributing and encouraging them to continue with what I consider to be a bad formula; forcing gamers to use a third-party program just to run a single-player offline game.

And I′m not hurting myself from not playing those games either. I′m content with the games I have :)

For how long? I'm not challenging you, I'm genuinely curious. Virtually all modern games are protected by online DRM, usually Steam. You will probably never play another Bethesda game ever again unless there's a massive crash or shift in the market. How many times can you replay Oblivion and Fallout 3?

Well, I guess I will do what I do now; take various long breaks with the games I have. I like playing the games I know and rarely do I feel the need for something new.

I don′t oppose Steam just to be an a**, I do it because I don′t like being forced to use it and that′s who I am, I don′t like being forced unnecessarily. Electricity to power my computer is one thing I can accept being forced to use, btw...

So I guess I won′t get newer games ever if they all migrate there. But that doesn′t mean I won′t discover an older gem here and there and get hooked once again

You might find it interesting that Oblivion, Fallout 3, VtM:B and Morrowind all came to me through a friend. I wouldn′t have gotten any of them if it hadn′t been because of him. He′s the sole reason I′m not still just playing the original Deus Ex and Star Wars Rebellion!

Edit: I got Deus Ex via him too, btw

I have a feeling more AAA video games will be released for sale before 2015 is over on gog.com.

I also have a feeling a lot of AAA video games will be released for sale on gog.com in 2016. Possibly more than in 2015.

For 2015 so far 7 AAA video games have been released for sale on gog.com.

Yes, GoG is an option. Or would be if I wasn′t obsessed with physical copies and covers with nice art work :D

You can purchase empty physical disc cases and empty discs from brick and mortar retailer stores and put covers of each video game sold on gog.com in a plastic sleeve on the physical disc case.

Here you go.

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/unofficial_dvd_covers_for_gog_com_games/page1

82 Pages worth of paper covers to put in the plastic sleeve of the physical disc case.

I hope that the physical copies will be activated at Steam. I primarily like having my games at Steam and for titles like this, I'll buy a physical copy just to pride my shelf. It's only convenient to be able to activate all games at Steam. I don't like being forced having to buy the game digitally just to get it on Steam. In my opinion if a game is on Steam, all versions of that game should be able to be activated there. So it shouldn't in my opinion matter if you buy a digital copy or a physical one.

A physical copy is the only copy of FO4 I'm getting. As long as I can play it offline without problems, I'm happy. I don't mind using Steam to activate the game, but sure as hell I will be pissed if I have to be online in order to run the game. That's major BS.

So, activation via Steam? Yes.

Running the game everytime via Steam? No.

I don't care about achievements, stats and other meaningless stuff like that. Hell, I'll install updates and patches manually if I have to. Just leave me alone to enjoy the game without extra BS. I like it that way.

I was really hoping that Fallout 4 would be available on GOG. During the whole Paid mod Fiasco, Bethesda said that they go with as little DRM as possible, and seeing as GOG is as DRM free as digital distributors come, it would be great if they released it on that.

Well "As little DRM as possible" and "no DRM" aren't exactly the same thing. I think Steam really is one of the best DRM schemes out there, personally. Mostly because it comes bundled with a service that I've been using for years anyway.

I have been using Steam since 2004. I still use Steam to this day today, but because of so many problems with Steam and the offline mode bug that I have and a some other PC gamers have. I have stopped purchasing video games from Steam since 2012. I have been purchasing video games from gog.com since 2011.

Selling PC versions of video games exclusively to one digital distribution retailer service is bad. PC versions of video game should be sold on all digital distribution retailer services that have millions of PC gamers who purchase the PC versions of video games from.

Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios are selling the PC version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Ubisoft's uPlay store and possibly on Electronic Arts (EA's) Origin store. So why not sell all of their video games on gog.com as well since gog.com right now has 70+ million PC gamer customers, even though a bunch of PC gamers have 2 gog.com accounts or who knows how many gog.com accounts. You can say the same thing for Steam. I have 4 Steam accounts, which I purchased video games on all 4 of my Steam accounts until 2012.

I honestly have never had any major issues with Steam. I must be the only one around here.

I should mention that I've been using Steam since 2008.

Skyrim was a Steam *exclusive* due to contractual terms. It wasn't released elsewhere, as the game was tied to Steam. I am pretty sure the FO:4 is going to go the same way. Buy a disk, and it will install the game, AFTER it installs steam, if it isn't already there...

What happened to releasing a game with a locked installer, and a code that came with the disk? Why does it now require some third-party software, that ALSO wants to continue to run in the background, to play my SINGLE PLAYER game?? I don't want to socialize, I don't give a rats patoot about my 'gamer score', or whatever it is, and it is consuming resources that would be put to better use to run my SINGLE PLAYER game...... Steam can stick it where the sun don't shine. :)

Even calling it a "pseudo-monopoly" is dead wrong, it doesn't have a monopoly nor does it appear to have one.

Sony has been hacked, Xbox live has been hacked, GoG can be hacked, literally everything can be hacked if it's connected to the internet ranging from computers to phones. We're in the digital age, almost everything is hooked up to computers and can be hacked. Valve would notice, they pay attention to their servers and actually monitor suspicious activity, I've had numerous friends get their steam account hacked only to get it back with in less then a week with everything they had before save some TF2 or Dota 2 items.
