i read somewhere atleast i thought i read were you could assign beds or houses to companions, yourself? if so how?

Yes, I've done this.

In 'building' view walk up to a settler. Choose command.

Walk over to the bed you wish them to use, look at it and choose 'assign'.

Seems to work fine.

(though I haven't found a way to allocate companions to quarters

(and I thought I had lost Dogmeat until I found him in a doghouse round the back.
