External HD to improve performance

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 1:38 pm

Digital Foundary did a video showing the stuttering that can happen in game can be reduced by running the game off an external drive

Anyone tried this themselves and noticed a difference? I was looking at getting a Western Digital My Passport external drive. Its 5400rpm same as whats in the xbox, but usb3 should make it faster

So another question is people that dont have stutter what external drive do you use?

I doubt it would make it faster since the HDD will still be limited to the 5400rpm

the used a external usb 3.0 SSD

if you use a 5400rpm drive youll get the same performance as the internal.

maybe a itsy bitsy bit faster depending on the quality of the 5400rpm.

but it wont run anyway near fast enough to match what they got with a ssd

I have nothing to compare to as mine is installed on a WD Caviar black running at 7200rpm and cant be bothered to reinstall on internal.

That said Ive not come across major frame drops. The only major stutter Ive had is when I built my massive house and tried moving the whole thing.

I thought even though its the same speed drive, because its using USB3 which has a faster transfer speed than SATA it would be faster than the internal?

The article comparisons mentioned actually said Fallout 4 works in a much more stable and glitch-free way if installed on a usb 3 solid state drive. Which is a rather expensive way to address frame rate issues! :)

I use an external hard drive and it works perfectly. No framerate loss, no stutters....its the way to go. Cant remember which one it is but its only a £60 one.

There is no way im shelling out 100 to 120 bucks on a external hard drive just to help performance....not when I have a Xbox One 1tb console, the studder and framerate issues are wide spread all over the web site...I am confident Bethesda will be addressing this in future updates, the Ps4 and Pc also having the same issues?

Weirdly my mate plays on the internal drive with no issues. Another mate on the internal does have framerate problems. Weird how 2 people playing on the same speed internal drive can have 2 different experiences of the game

I do agree with you bobblebob100 that some people don't have those issues and some do, but the same issues between the studdering and framerate on all 3 platforms and it happens in certain areas including myself needs to at least, be looked into.
