The quest tells me to talk to the Settlers but when I do I can't talk to them only ask them to trade.

Is this a bug?

Does the settler tell you about his son? and do you get a quest marker for Monsignor Square (or or Circle, I don't remember for sure)? The settlers for this quest are a bit different, there is no real give and take dialogue that I noticed, but the quest worked out.

The only thing that happens when I talk to the settlers is I ask them to trade

I'll keep trying - maybe I missed a settler - they do wander off a bit.

Same Problem here. I have the quest to talk to the Settlers in Sanctuary. But there is no Quest Marker. And if I talk to the settlers (even the orginial named ones) the only give the "trade-option".

I have built up Sanctuary as my main Base with 20+ inhabitants and a lot of the settlers work in Shops, might this interfere with the quest?

I did several quest of this kind before, one of which was in Sanctuary.

In my case it turned out to be the settler who I'd sent to establish supply lines with another settlement. He turned up, told me where the kidnapped person was (not his son as in the above post - in my case was a woman).

Note: once you get this quest do it quite soon as it can time out and fail.

Still can't communicate with Carvey about anything other than the Castle (and he's holding a bunch of my loot!!!! Grrrrr
