You could just leave him to his own devices without actually talking to him, or just shoot the dog. You aren't forced to take it on as your companion.
You can call it a mutt and be done with it...
I doubt we'll be stuck with the dog an entire playthrough. It looks like the dog is a 'tutorial' hand given companion meant to introduce you to the companion mechanics.
I think I saw a dialog option allowing you to dismiss the dog when you first encounter him. Most likely, you'll be able to dismiss him or send him back to your crib whenever you want. Let's just hope you don't have to pay for dog armor.
Just give me a Deathclaw companion called Cuddles, and I'll be happy.
I dont care about the dog. Dont use companions unless I really, really feel like listening to inane blabber interrupting my concentration when I am trying to aim, or have a conversation with an NPC. Thats usually when I am playing the game drunk.
Well from the demo it looks to be the same as Fallout 3 so you don't have to recruit the dog.
It will be interesting to see if the dog dies easily as it charges in front of your shots or if they have gone the basically indestructable route.
Hey think of dogmeat in fallout 3 after he died one his puppies came back, so that might happen if you blow this dogs brains out.
Even if recruiting him is forced and he can't be killed, you can still just leave it at home.
As long as we can make the dog wait at the home base or whatever, I'll be fine having a dog in the game.
There will probably be a stay option for the mongrel. Initial reports look like followers are getting the "immortal" setting at release (Subject to change naturally). If you are on console you won't be able to shoot and eat him David Valentine style unless they allow the console editor option for consoles (may as well if they are willing to have a go at mods)
Todd just gave an interview about immortal companions, and in it he specifically stated the player could go it alone if they wished, without any companions. And he called the dog a companion, so that means you can leave the dog behind or not recruit it at all.
Or, he is just immortal when he is your companion? Thus you psychos can kill him otherwise?
Todd Howard confirmed that you can play the game with the dog, some other companion, or completely alone. In the same interview when he was talking about their immortality.
I always like playing alone in these games. Just going to get the dog and then put him in one of the dog houses in my shelter. Companions aren't really a good idea if you're going to be playing a stealth character.
