At the start of E3's character creation.

Quite sure that was due to the Veteran's hall mention.

If you can pretend that Ulysses was a liar just because you didn't like the dlc, you can pretend that you never had a family. The Courier'a backstory involves having been a Courier for years, having traveled all over the NCR, having punched a deathclaw and charged a super mutant with a pen knife, and a multitude other events that say a thing or two about their character.

No, they should work on doing a better job themselves. The day they decide to ditch stories entirely for the sake of the world is the day their games completely cease to be Fallout games.

I have but just 1 answer for your problem: ''Alternative start'''

Running it on a xbox one? I have just one answer: wait for ''alternative start''

running on a ps4? Then thumbs up bethesda will not limit modding to only the pc and xbox one.

No. It was 13,000 lines for each gender. 13,000 for the woman and 13,000 for the man.

For me it destroys the atmosphere if ALL chracters are voiced beside the PC... The new setup allows more atmospheric dialogs. And actually... dialoge options do the same. What did you do if there was no fitting dialog option for you?

There almost always was, because we were allowed more than four. My complaint isn't in the dialogue itself, but the entire system. With the old one, your character said exactly what was spelled out for you. You knew what you selected. With this one, we are given three or so words, and then the character says a lot more than that, with a tone that is unlike what we might've expected from the three words. We even got an example of this in the e3 gameplay, when we got the words "Go get food." and instead of just telling the robot to get food, the protagonist got pissy with him before pausing and deciding, "yeah, now that I think about it, I am kinda hungry." That's NOT the dialogue we were led to expect from three word option that was selected. This is just one case and it's at the very beginning of the game. I don't think it's a stretch to assume there will be many more. Look at Bioware, who use the same system.

How is this backstory any different from Oblivion or Skyrim? You start in prison but if my character is me then it's wrong because I've never been to prison. They have to come up with something and like other people have said, its not as restricting as The Wither 3 for example or Mass Effect. A role can be defined in several ways. It all depends on the kind of story you're trying to tell.

Ok, so you start married with kids. It's common enough to apply to most people. However, after a disaster, you take on a different role and thats the key. I'm sure lots of men were married before WW2, but war broke out and bad - scratch that, HORRENDOUS [censored] happened. Do you honesty think most of those men came home and carried on as normal? Yeah ok, you're given a wife and kid at the start but after the bad [censored] happens you have a blank slate. It was by far the most straight forward way of gender selection without making you a prisoner or starting as a child. You can ignore your spouse. Pretend it was a dream while you slept or something.

My point is instead of complaining, excercise your roleplaying prowess and imagine your way out.

Seeing as console mods have been announced, it may be a pointless worry.

Live another life mods will be incoming and you will be able to play as anyone from any faction and any town you like at some point sooner or later.

Meanwhile enjoy playing through Beth's story first while the mods are being created.

I'm sure there will be alternate start mods in the not too distant future.

I keep hearing how great Witcher 3 is by comparison and honestly, i hate it. I don't want to play as Geralt, i couldn't possibly care less about him. I hate being thrust into a pre-determined story about an already established character. It's not my story, it's not my character; it's some random person's character, built according to their vision, without any possible consideration of my views. It totally kills the game for me.

So far, FO:4 seems rather liberal in it's offerings, though more restrictive than FO and FO:NV. I'm pretty much okay with that.

I am concerned about the voice though. I'd hate for my spunky gunslinger to wind up sounding like Fran Drescher. I do expect there will be a mod to disable the player voice if Beth doesn't add that option themselves.

I can forsee 2 possible outcomes of the pre-determined background after the player leaves the vault...

1) The player character talks about their family, how much they miss/ love them etc. There is also the possibility that the spouse and / or child survive and play a prominent role in the story.

2) The spouse and child are permanantly dead and are never mentioned again. Dialogue options mentioning them are available, but the player can completely ignore them.

In the former case, the background would be very intrusive, putting limits on roleplaying. I can only hope that Bethesda writes an exceptional story to make up for it.

In the latter case, the background is completely inconsequential to the overall story, but still hampers roleplaying by forcing the player to be a parent, married and hetero / bisixual.

I'm not hyped about either of those options.

From what I know, the Sole Survivor is as predetermined as Bioware's Commander Shepard, who is a human marine. You can be gay, straight, bisixual, asixual. You can come from earth, a spaceship/marine family, or a colony. Here? You play as a person who was married with a child, who may not be from Boston, or could be bisixual. That is all.

In regard to only having 4 options, it is not the first time we see this dialog wheel setup, as many games use it nowadays. Can't say i am a fan of it, but i guess if more then 4 awnsers are possible it will be displayed like a compas pointer way. So you have North, south, west and east. Then extra options might apear on the NW, NE, SW, SE parts of the dialog wheel and be a total of 8 possible responses. Or it could be that if more then 4 responses are there, a "More" chose would allow us to see aditional options for a responce.

In the end, till we get to see more of the games dialog system, its all speculation.

I would like one better, an option to tell Codsworth "what're you talking about? i dont you crazy robot" Are you sure sir? i would know my old master's face anywhere? "(warning picking this option nullifies your characters past and all options related to it) I am not gonna tell you again robot, get away from me"
