Key Mappings for Menus

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 5:18 am

The game allows you to map keys for character controls, but not for menus, which causes some conflict with things like navigating in the pip boy and opening containers.

For instance, I use RDFG for movement rather than WASD (shifted right two keys), but actions like opening containers remain the same, which means R is the key both for moving forward and opening containers for me. This makes movement with this scheme impossible without accidentally opening everything in view.

Short answer: You can't remap these.

Slightly longer answer: you can remap keys using a third-party app, there's a thread up about Autohotkey. This is a clumsy solution and will make things like naming your character or a weapon a lot more annoying, and AHK is a little annoying to set up. It's not that hard but the online tutorials try to do too much.

Thanks Merovign, though I already understand that they can't be remapped, and am already building an autohotkey script that will suit my needs. But it is a clumsy solution for something that is very easy for the developer to do and something that is very standard in video games. Hardcoding keys is a bad practice that shouldn't be done in the first place.

I'd like to see a developer solution to this, and I initially commented to support. They told me this is the place to file those complaints, so here it is. Maybe this isn't the right place in order to reach the developers?
