It is optional because you don't need to do minuteman quest to finish the main quest or exploration. Minuteman are just optional settlement rebuilt faction that you can totally ignored if you want

The Minuteman stuff is optional your not forced into doing those side quest. If you want to rebuild the mintueman then do those quest. If not then go do something else.

O.K.

Take a deep breath.

Here is how Disassembly works.

Drop anything you don't want/need onto the ground in a place you "own", that is, any allied settlement.

Hold down the "V" key for a couple of seconds and this will bring up the Construction menu.

Mouse over one of the items on the ground.

Hit the "R" key to scrap that item.

Confirm your choice with the "E" key.

Congratulations!

You have just disassembled an item.

Repeat as often as necessary to collect all the items you need.

Hope this helps.

I LOLed at this post.
None of the factions quest were necessary for the main story and the fact you actually went to do them without realizing it actually shows how good they are in immersing yourself in the world.

They don't require you to do this, as another user pointed out the fact you felt it was necessary shows how immersed in the game you were. Enjoy the game, make your own (good) choices :P

Sorry guys I was having a long day I was able to finish it. Part of the issue was it would say I have enough stuff to build the generator I needed, I hit build and I don't see anything change, so it looks like nothing happened. Only when you start to move away from the workbench you see the generator and its outlined in red showing you couldn't put it there. I hope they fix that need to be more clear that it was built.
