Remappable keys for Lefties Please.

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:38 am

Please make ALL the keys usable remappable please. Not only the movenment controls ect, but things like the A/E when in menues/V.A.T.S, the 1-8 for weapons to be able to use 1-8 on keypad, basically everything. The problem is some/most/ME left handed users use the right side of keyboard rather than left WSAD combo. It has to do with hand spacing and comfort, being forced to use WSAD and associated key patterns means lefties have to have cross hand across body, making for uncomfortable controls. Or constantly be taking hands off movment keys to be activating keys on other side of keyboard, or off the mouse(makes for disjointed playing.) Every other part of Fallout 3 is/was superb(and FO4 should continue sucess), even with the FPS shock to OLD fallouters :). So thats my 5 cents worth.

I second this. Please also include southpaw, legacy and legacy-southpaw stick options for controllers.

What? Changing game mechanics for a measly 10% if the population?! I smell... pandering.

Skyrim. Before we would be able to use the game pad and use it for movement. For what ever reason, at least I couldn't map out the AWSD keys for movement.

At least changing controls is do-able at this stage. Better than some of the other Minority pandering I've read over the last two days.

As a left-handed person, I have no problems using a right-handed setup, as I have done for years. I suppose this makes me more ambidextrous? Which is something I am really forced to be in a world of right-handed scissors...

Skyrim didn't allow binding to the number pad on release, and had some functions hard-coded to specific keys. There was a mod to make it fully rebindable.

Fallout 3 had the Pipboy hard-coded to TAB (or maybe it was just exiting the Pipboy that didn't change to the rebound key), but that was eventually patched. The A and E functions in the looting dialogue are still hard-bound.

Often secondary functions (like exiting a vehicle or gun turret) get missed in many games and don't bind properly to the main function like they should.

This is why we lefties have to always clamor for full and proper key binding, when it should be a no-brainer.

Just use a PC controller. Boom; problem solved.

You know back in the 18th century they had devices that would cure your left-handedness. Of course there were drawbacks, in some extreme cases crippling injuries, but usually the side effects we mild (severe stuttering was common). You might want to look into it. :P

Just kidding.

An ability to remap the keyboard is an excellent idea, since not everybody has the five bazillion bottle caps it takes to purchase a fully reprogrammable keyboard.

Playing left-handed with a controller is even worse than kb+m with poor remapping options (at least, for some of us). Instead of aiming with a mouse in my good hand, I get to use just the thumb of my bad hand? Sounds great!

Typically, southpaw controller mapping is atrociously unoptimized. They often swap the sticks, but leave the buttons as default. If you're using the right thumb for movement and A for jump, how does that work exactly?

Skyrim was better than most games, in that it let you remap most of the controller buttons. You couldn't swap the sticks, but it was possible through editing a cfg file. I did actually set up a decent lefty gamepad scheme for that game. However, in a game with first person gun-play, there's no way I would ever use a controller.

Both my brother and I are left handed, and we've never had any problems with the typical controller layout. Maybe it's just because we're used to controllers and you're used to a keyboard and mouse, but it's super intuitive compared to PC gaming. It's not rocket surgery.

For people who've grown up on consoles, maybe it feels fine--that's why I said "some of us", I don't claim to speak for all lefties.

For me, a controller is not "super intuitive". Using a mouse in my good hand is very natural for looking around, it feels like just turning my head to look at something. With a controller, it's a constant fight to aim it where I want to look, even with the left stick. With the right stick, forget it--I'm constantly looking at my feet or the sky, never mind shooting something with any precision.
