Black loading screen, partial fix - window mode

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:14 am

Hello all,

I have searched the forums and found a lot of people having the same issue I have>

Their PC is up to specs, they downloaded the latest drivers, verified the game files, reinstalled, .... and still the game crashes on start-up.

In searching I found that you have to adjust the FalloutPref.ini file (steam folder and in the mygames folder) So that;

bMaximize window=0

bBorderless=1

bFull screen=0

iSize H= your pc resolution (mine is 1080)

iSize W= your pc resolution (mine is 1920)

Adjust the compatibility on the launcher.exe and fallout 4.exe to match your windows version.

Then run the game in windowed mode and select the right resolution and it is fixed and should play.

Now this is a partial fix in that if I did this My resolution did not show up in the selection box (altough internet post claimed it worked for them). If I tried to run it in a normal full screen mode the crash still happens. If i run it in window mode the game runs great except in a smaller window instead of full screen.

So hope this fixes it for you, and any help to fix the full screen/window issue for me is greatly appreciated.

FIXED it for me! Most of you will hae tried step one and got it to run in a small window, if so go to step two, if not step one is how i got to run it in a small window

1) update drivers (manually), compatibility mode windows 8 both for the launcher and exe file in the game folder. Find the Fallout4Pref.Ini file in the steamapps/fallout4/fallout4 folder and in the documets/mygames/fallout 4 folder. Find the iSize H=... part.

replace the corresponding lines above and below with :
bMaximizeWindow=0
bBorderless=1
iSize H= 1080 (your wanted resolution mine is 1080)
iSize W=1920 (your wanted resolution mine is 1920)

Launch via steam, go to options (before you press play on the launcher) make sure borderless and windowed mode is checked. dont look at the resolution, we will fix it later
Run it in borderless window mode. You can now run it in a small window right? If not :s

2) Run nvidia geforce experience (found in programfiles x86>nvidia corporations)
3) scan for the game (may need to change the scan-file)
4) adjust setting using the program as wanted
5) press play/launch in the program and the fallout launcher will start
6) press play, DO NOT PRESS OPTIONS, this will revert it back to the crappy 800x600 resolution and you will not be able to select the right resolution/full screen.
7) play full screen
8) cry happy tears

When you say updating drivers "manually" what exactly are you talking about?

I've dled and updated my GeForce GTX 960 driver to the most recent (11/9/15 version I believe), but I did that through dling the file from the website and running the .exe.

I tried the steps you mentioned above but unfortunately I can't get past step 1 so I wanted to try manually updating them if I've done it incorrectly.

Thanks.

EDIT- Nevermind about all that. I restarted Steam and it booted up in windowed mode. Then I changed my graphics and back to fullscreen and it launched perfectly! Not sure if what you said helped but I'm just following Step 8 now!

Thanks a ton and be safe out there in the wasteland!

Hey Tutterkop Thanks for the post. I had a different problem and your post gave me an idea on what might be wrong with mine. So I went ahead and changed all three settings and it worked for me.

Changed Laptop Resolution

Changed Fallout4Prefs.ini to match

Changed Fallout 4 Splash screen in the Options tab Graphics Appearance and Resolutions to match and it worked.

No more blinking, flashing and my mouse started to work and was unboxed as it had been at the lower resolution.

You can look at the fix posted in the:

"Fallout 4 Hardware & Software Issues" for PC.

Titled: "Fallout 4 Screen Flashing or Blinking",

I'd cut n paste the link but my new laptop won't let me cut n paste, an issue for another day.

Again thanks. Keith
