I have a minor problem. I was using Dogmeat and in Diamond city I took on Piper as a companion. It asked me where to return Dogmeat and I selected Sanctuary Hills. Unfortunately after getting back to sanctuary he wasn't there. I went to another mission and when I came back he still wasn't there.

So my next mission is probably Fort Hagen (assuming I survive) and I think Dogmeat might reappear. But is there anything anyone can suggest on how I could get him to go somewhere I could find him after?

Keep doing the main quest and he'll come back for 'Getting a Clue'. And as soon as he does take him to where you want him and build a doghouse. Problem solved.

I'm not sure how to handle the logistics. I mean Piper is along with me, when I go to the quest he will (hopefully) appear or else I'm busted (needed for the quest). At some point in the quest the game will decide the dog is no longer needed but when that happens I'll probably be at or near Fort Hagen. I can't fast travel with both of them and if I somehow keep the dog I might lose Piper.

Truth is unless there are further quests that need him, Dogmeat is nice but I'd rather have a human'ish companion. I hope I don't lose him though. If I send him to the Red Rocket is that less trouble prone?

Well dogmeat seems like he is gone for good this time. I'd rather have Piper but it's a shame for him to be lost.

There are other threads on this, including one I started earlier before I found the answer. Evidently he'll be in one of the doghouses in Sanctuary. There are a couple behind houses and he should be in one of those. He's hard to spot because he's dark. If not you can scrap all the existing doghouses in Sanctuary and then build a new one in an easy to see place and he should reappear.

I haven't been able to try this myself yet to confirm.

You were right. I searched all the doghouses in Sanctuary and he was behind the chemical station in the house near there. I built one near the base and will eventually get around to scrapping the rest. Thanks for your help.
