Why is Fallout 4 250Reais($85) on the Steam Brazilian S

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 1:36 pm

As an avid consumer of steam products, and a fan of the Fallout series, I really don't understand why this is happening.

Most games that come out in the Brazil steam store come out at a sensible price; 100-120 reais, the standard price for an international computer game, yes thats around what we pay for a physical copy.

This year the real devalued so much it went from 2 reais for 1 dollar, to 3 reais for 1 dollar. Thats okay if you do the math it would come out to 50 dollars to 100 reais, 60 dollars to 120 reais. All good.
So 3 dollars for 1 real. 50 dollars would become 150 reais, and 60 dollars 180 reais. All kinda good but understandable.

Console games in brazil cost 250 reais. Seriously. 250 reais, thats equivilent to 85 dollars with the economy as is. The worst part is that we have ALWAYS paid this much for console games (ever since Playstation 2 days) meaning back then it was 2 to 1, so 250 reais would be 125 dollars. Yes people we paid 125 dollars for our console games.

Now let me tell you why i don't buy console games in brazil: Steam, prices are amazing, prices are fair and steam doesn't hussle me with any BS.
All of the sudden Fallout 4 pre-order comes to steam and BAM! 250 reais, the console price, the 85 dollar price.

Brazil minimum wage is 788 Reais, in comparison the US minimum wage is around 1160 dollars a month.
788 reais equates to 262 dollars, thats a weeks pay in the US on minimum wage.
250 reais is nearly HALF of min wage in my country. How does anyone think of buying a game on that? even if its DOUBLE minimum wage, that would be one quarter of your salary on one game...

Nobody budgets for that, nobody pays that, nobody is that stupid unless you are filthy rich.

Oh don't get me started on PS4 prices for the past 2 years...FOUR THOUSAND REAIS. Sony heard the complaints and is going to start manufacturing PS4s in Brazil so the prices can go to the low 4 digits.

Bethesda and consumers, what do you think of this?

Sorry if my english isn't the best, i tried. Also i am recently graduated, if i worked as a 3d artist(where i want to work) i'd be paid 2k. That's 2.5 times Min wage here. yep it svcks

I think you need to talk to you government about it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this largely due to import laws and such in Brazil?

For me, 60 dollars is not a fair price for a videogame, even for an AAA. 85 dollars is simply robbery. And taking into account life standards in Brazil, that makes console games a luxury product, am I wrong? I think videogames should never be luxury products.

Remember what Guybrush Treepwood said in the end of the first Monkey Island... "Never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game".

I came here just for this topic. I don't know why they are charing this price on Steam. All the "AAA" games are much less expensive than this here in Brazil, even Assassin's Creed Syndicate has better price launch than Fallout 4. I hope Bethesda changes this price, many PC gamers here are mad because of this. Many will not buy the game until it reaches a fair price.

PC games doesn't have many taxes here, GTA V on PC was the cheapest in the entire world.

So it's just consoles and console games? Hmm, that would be strange, then. I'm still not sure Bethesda is the one to ask about it, though.

Yeah, similar for Turkey. This year we got our own store for Turkish Lira but while on average many games are rather cheap like Witcher 3, which is around 35$, some games like Fallout 4 (GTA5, AC: U etc) are nearly 70$. In fact it'd be 80$ if it wasn't for recent devaluation of Lira.

It most definitely isn't a store policy but due to a publisher agreement with a local highway robber distributor, they force it on Steam to follow up on their extortion monopoly. Most people end up having to buy keys from shady sources because we definitely don't have the income of US standards and they ask for even above that level of price.

Bethesda is the culprit here because they made a deal with that distributor just last month, their games were cheap before that, like Skyrim and FO3.

Console games are taxed as gambling games (stupid lol) meanwhile PC games get classified as computer softwares, which have less taxes.

In the UK it's close to the equivalent of $80. Basically, Steam are screwing people around on currency conversion again. Because they can.

Valve are disgusting.

Don't worry man the same thing happened to Mortal Kombat X. In a mouth or closer to launch the price will go down.

Just out of curiosity, how would you react if Bethesda Softworks responded with something like, "We don't understand it either. We are selling to the Brazilian distributors at the same price as all other distributors."

Of course, you would actually have to ask gamesas and not us fans (who these forums are set up for). They pretty much have a policy of not responding to threads in these forums. Try asking them at help.gamesas.com

Yeah, i just wanted to see if i could get some opinions, from both consumers and Bethesda employees posting in the forums. I would be surprised if i got an answer from Bethesda. If they said something like that i'd call BS since Steam distribution is done without a middle man in most cases, since Bethesda is self publishing it on Steam it is their responsability.

Thanks for the tips!
