Thoughts on melee with firearms?

So if you watched the E3 kill montage video you can see the PC pistol whipping an enemy and during the weapon customization preview you can see a bayonet mod for a few guns and it says it increases melee damage by 33%.... so what are your opinions on this mechanic being added to fallout? i personally think its a good addition as long as its balanced correctly and doesn't make Melee weapons and Unarmed obsolete...

I like it, it can be used to make some awesome or silly weapons which I appreciate.

I think the gun melee attack may be more to stagger a melee enemy who was getting too close, so you can back up and again establish a distance between you and your foe that your gun's projectiles are more than happy to travel for you.

Kinda like the bow/crossbow whack added by Skyrim.

Whacking them with your gun may cause excess wear-and-tear on the gun, which would make a proper melee/fist weapon a better option for point-blank.

I like it. Reminds me of Oblivion where we could cast magic while using two-handers. There's a bit of duality going on here between melee weapons and guns and I love it.

I'd still like exclusively melee weapons, like swords and such. But I think it is very, very good to be able to improvise a melee weapon from whatever we're currently holding.

It makes sense that you're able to smack someone upside the head with your pistol. Based on the damage that we're seeing coming from other weapons compared with the damage figures we saw in the crafting video, it looks like melee attacks aren't going to be overpowered. If an assault rifle kills the average raider in 4 or 5 hits and does 15 damage per hit, it looks like the standard 10mm pistol does maybe half of it's 18 damage when you smack a female dog. I'm just roughly guessing based on the Atom Bomb Baby combat footage, so I could be wrong.

It could make for some cool hybrid builds if the bayonet benefits from melee perks and strength.

I've been wanting this feature since F3. I'm really, really happy it's showing up. You have no idea how badly I wanted to stick a bayonet on This Machine and wreck some [censored]. It looked like they tried to get it working on FNV, but couldn't for whatever reason. The bayonet model for the service rifle can be found in the game files.

Bonus: If you look at http://static5.gamespot.com/uploads/ignore_jpg_scale_super/43/434805/2884036-screen+shot+2015-06-14+at+8.05.35+pm+%282%29.png, you can see a bayoneted triple barrel missile launcher.

Now, with that bayonet mod there, all we need now is to be able to execute sprint melee attack...

Oooh, bayonet charging with a laser musket or banzai charging with a hunting rifle would be a change...
