If Todd Howard wants us to be able to be OP, then by all means, we are going to be OP if we want. You all can self-nerf yourselves if you want, but I intend to make myself as Ogre-Powered as possible. And yes, I'm aware I typed Ogre, because the Wastes are about to be Shrekt.

The hand holding in Skyrim was downright offensive. I hope they leave up to the players morr to find their way. I don't need a magic marker or glowing trail.

More like the older Fallout games; 1 and 2

The only companion I'll travel with is the dog. Man's best friend and always loyal.

And those dog kill animations are sick

I'd like to point out that this was quite aggressive.

Also, I doubt you'll be able to keep the power armour and minigun, and like you, I hope not. Time will tell. Laser musket doesn't look overly impressive.

And as far as companions go, I have to imagine that Codsworth is going to be rather underpowered initially. He looks rather beat up after you come out of the vault, and his weapons/armor will likely be of low quality. Over time and/or with the right perks and tools, perhaps you'll be able to fix him up to be more formidable, but I don't believe he'll be impressive at the beginning of the game.

These seems pretty reasonable. During the gunship segment the dog had a little red scarf on so we know we can influence what the dog looks like to some degree.

People could be given just a pack of healing items at the start and someone would call it hand-holding.

Hold on Mr. Handy is a follower? I think the laser musket is stupid to be far for energy users we need a starter weapon.

Who says you'll go to the place where that mission started right away? I sometimes bypassed Megaton completely when playing Fallout 3, I often went directly to New Vegas in New Vegas.... they showed you a place you could possibly encounter early on, but it doesn't mean you will. Hell, I think the plasma machinegun is going to be more op than that laser musket... just about any crafted weapon will more than likely be much better than a basic stock weapon. As for the power armor. Who cares if you keep it or not? You have the option of never using it again or using it as much as you want, as you have in all the other games... and the majority of the footage shown is done so in an armored vault suit, not the power armor. Personally, I think the power armor is going to be destroyed in the fight with the death claw, and all you're left with are a few pieces to start crafting your own.

People see being given a companion or two, a free weapon, and potentially Power Armor in the game as "hand holding".

Has it ever occurred that another possibility is the game is fundamentally more difficult, warranting these seeming "riches" early on? The comments on the rubber banding level scaling come to mind.

I would imagine we do start with power armor and a minigun once we get back to our little neighborhood. The problem is said power armor may not be operational or entirely effective, and the minigun doesn't necessarily need to be any good. I doubt the armor pieces they showed us are entirely cosmetic. The frame to start working on power armor certainly doesn't need to be crafted or discovered, since it stands in as the workbench of power armor.

As for the musket, eh, it's a starting point for laser weaponry. Remember, we can convert a pistol into an automatic rifle.

You also don't need to use the laser musket, unless you have no other weapon... I don't see them forcing you to use it. It's just the npc saying "Hey, pick up that gun and help us out". If you've already got a gun, you pick up the laser musket... and just continue using the weapon you already have.

I actually used inferior weapons even after I had some of the more powerful ones. like the 10mm pistol, for a long while as the better guns were more rare and costly to repair and I wouldn't want to waste my cool guns on molerats and bloat flies or robotrons.

The power armor is probably in the weakest condition with the worst components and in the process of playing the game with it from the start could take many hours to get the materials to make it very good armor. as far as companions, neither of them seem all that great as far as being powerful fighters but they'd probably be helpful in sponging off some damage and having them easily accesable early on could mean that there is a lot more serious danger in the wasteland in this game.

I think the power armor is mission only at first like fighting the gang of raider and that deathclaw. A level 5 character wouldn't be able to take on deathclaw unless they give you some kind of protection and a good weapon( not a minigun fan myself). We can probably start making our own once we start dealing the brotherhood.

This doesn't really seem like "hand-holding" to me. When I think of "hand-holding," I think of how New Vegas had you not only visit every major location, but how it also had you quest for every faction in the game [or eliminate the faction] in the just the main quest. I think of map markers and a guiding hand that shows off everything and leaves little to player initiative; usually failing to reward exploration.

I doubt they'll give Power Armor too early in the game unless it's been overhauled (which it likely has). The laser musket didn't look that great; I'll stick with a traditional laser rifle. I'm indifferent to the two companions. I've always preferred to wander alone.

Awwwwwwww! <3 I hadn't noticed that.

Yeah, I'm similarly unworried about this because I think the emphasis on weapon mods will dramatically change the weapon gameplay, and we know the power armor gameplay is way different. Laser Musket might be a good gun, eventually, with mods packed on it. I'm with everyone else: that section still seems like tutorial to me, and I'm unconcerned.

And I'm pro-dog scarf.

But can I put the scarf of Codsworth?

These are the questions we need answers to.
