G-Sync Monitor Fallout4 Thread. Bug? Just Settings?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 7:13 pm

Haven't really found any specific threads for G-Sync Monitor owners around the web and I wanted to make one, since many "fixes" I've read about are mainly for those attempting to achieve higher framerates, or just for higher rate monitors... without G-Sync. The sticky here has some recommendations for high refresh rate monitors, but doesn't specifically say G-Sync. I'd be totally fine with 60FPS and G-Sync was on... and the game worked.

Now, I know Bethesda and Nvidia must at least be aware of trying G-Sync on Fallout4, since they highlight using it on their tweak guide. However, there is no indication that you have to do something special to get the game to work properly, nor any discussion about settings for it... Just them bragging about the tech.

Last night I downloaded and installed Fallout4 via Steam, forced a clean Nvidia driver install 358.91 and hit play. 5 minutes in, I was learning the hard way about the "terminal bug" as I was looking at the bottom halves of my arms unable to move in game.

So, we could go through all the combinations I've tried so far, messing with:

  • iPresentInterval (doesn't seem recommended)
  • Mouse smoothing, acceleration, etc. .INI tweaks
  • My Win10 Desktop Refresh Rate (should this matter with a fullscreen game anyway?)
  • RivaTuner or other mechanisms of limiting framerate

But I keep either having the terminal bug, lock picking going wacky, character dialog clipped audio + horrendous lip sync, or having to disable G-Sync. Doesn't seem like this should be the case.

Please share if you've figured the puzzle out, and even if a solution is found it'd be nice to have things "just work" at some point for other people coming into the game.

Gsync doesn't need to be specified. Whatever solution they'll come up with for regular high refresh rate monitors (that assumably have vsync or the game's framerate cap disabled) will ultimately also work for Gsync hardware. Also, Gsync will always overide any framerate cap set by drivers or software, so any kind of setting override in an .ini file will not work for you. Only exiting the game and temporarily disabling Gsync itself will work. This is simply what I have observed in the previous Fallouts and Skyrim. gamesas has noted the problem for high refresh rate monitors, and for now that will have to be enough.

Alternatively, there is the hope of ENB. Not just a visual package anymore, it adds a bunch of needed fixes to previous versions of the Creation engine. It was my saving grace when I purchased Skyrim a little while back, without it I would not have gotten past the carriage sequence in the beginning. Last I heard Boris was working on a new version of ENB for Fallout 4, but he appeared put off a lot by the way the Creation engine works now. Terrible design choices across the board. He isn't too happy with gamesas, but he did release a small patch already. Perhaps we'll see a proper ENB in time.

I got a g-sync monitor earlier this year and I'm loving it.

For Fallout 4, I'm just using http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:NVIDIA_Inspector to limit the frame-rate to 60, and everything is working fine for me. I've been using it to do the same in Skyrim for years now.

Thanks yeah. My experimentation has yielded the same results... at least 100 times loading the game now. Whether I'm turning on Vsync, or adaptive-half, or using a frame-rate limiter program, it all accomplishes the same thing: Killing G-Sync. I have not yet found a way to make my 144Hz monitor run with G-Sync on at 60FPS to avoid breaking the game.

I *HAVE* to do one of those three (thus killing G-Sync) to avoid getting stuck in terminals.

It should definitely be considered a bug. I bet if there was a way to G-Sync at 60FPS the game might not crash, but I've not yet figured that out. Might possibly even need changes from Nvidia to accomplish something weird like that.

Bethesda, please fix G-Sync monitors to be able play your game. This should be considered a high-priority bug. The technology is even show-cased on Nvidia's Fallout4 page as I mentioned above.

Oh forgot to quote you too... wanted to say very much appreciate your help here too. While this will run the game without getting stuck at terminals, this looks like it is nixing G-Sync. I notice quite the difference in quality when doing any limiting or changing of Vsync. Furthermore, I've had to re-apply these settings each time I reboot. They don't seem to save, nor do I want to have ALL my games affected at a deep level like this, nor do I think it'd be appropriate to expect your average person to go to such lengths to be able to play the game.

[TLDR; Still a bug, Bethesda!]

I've continued to work on this, here are your options (in my order of preference) if you've got a G-Sync Monitor. I still would LIKE TO HEAR FROM BETHESDA, acknowledging, confirming or offering a no-compromise solution for people with G-Sync Monitors. Hope this helps others until we do:

  • 120Hz Windows Desktop Setting + iPresentInterval=2 (in falloutprefs.ini):
    • Game only gets stuck at terminals about half the time. I've been mashing jump as I'm leaving terminals and always quick save before touching one.
    • Smooth graphics and FPS.
    • Even though it's a global change, 120Hz is fine for desktop and has only minor impact to other games.
  • Use Nvidia Control Panel to turn off G-Sync and choose Adaptive Half Vsync.
    • Never gets stuck at terminals
    • Graphics obviously not as smooth and get the V-Sync slice.
    • Settings are per-game and stay saved.
  • Use Nvidia Inspector or similar to set FPS limit.
    • Same as above. Never stuck at terminals.
    • Might look a little more smooth than above, but not much. I tried 60 and 73FPS.
    • I experienced losing these settings randomly, so it became very frustrating until I figured out it was happening.
    • Also, this is global so it'll drastically impact other games. (Maybe delving deeper into one tool or another would show me how to change settings per game? Don't know-- I only saw ways to change it a driver level).
  • Set iPresentInterval=0. This uncaps framerate in game.
    • Never stuck at terminals
    • Maintains the desired smoothness and great FPS of my top choice.
    • All dialog ends up 2+ seconds ahead of the mouth movements of characters and looks ridiculous. Lock picking becomes very difficult.
    • Non-global and doesn't require a single change to anything. Zero impact to other games.
