Do you think the UI is more basic than FA3 or NV?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 7:48 am

(I'm unable to post links/pictures, so bear with me.)

Looking at the Fallout 4 UI, it seems really basic compared to Fallout 3 or even Fallout: New Vegas. It looks much closer to a UI made in MS Paint (no offense devs, you worked hard) because of how simple it looks. I think I preferred the horizontal Megaman life bar compared to the Windows 97 loading bar. This game may have a 70s/80s theme, but that doesn't mean we have to make the UI look like it was made during that time (besides the Doom UI which looked good for its time).

Does anyone else agree with me?

I think I can deal. It's clean, simple and gives me the info I need.

No major problems with it here. Although maybe the bar at the bottom gives unnecessary info (Select, Accept, Return...etc) after a while, you're soon going to know what button does what.

Just a lil nitpick but I'd provide an option to turn it off. But if you can't, well que sera, sera. Mods should hopefully allow you to do just that to move, remove and resize.

For me I want an UI that is basic and simple and has a nice flow. This one feels like it has that.

The thing is it should have options to fine tune your needs. Hopefully it does even for the consoles.

Agreed. I like not having lots of extra borders, letters, etc to get in the way. I remember playing MUDs back in the day (actually still doing so to this day) and simplifing the prompt as much as possible, even more so when in combat.

Yeah it is pretty minimalistic, which I don't really like but it's not that big of a deal and like everyone else says just wait for mods to fix everything.

we are, after all, using a new pipboy... which might be running a different system version than the pipboy 3000....but the hud is probably still subject to change.

What I want to know is what the numbers next to the raiders level supposed to signify? Their armor rating?

Considering how often I've seen threads about the previous games (FO3, FO:NV, Skyrim) from people complaining about how much UI there was on the screen, how seeing any UI "ruins their immersion", etc, etc, etc.... and how most UI mods make them less intrusive? I suspect you won't get too many positive responses.

Seems like it, with the shield being damage resistance against conventional weapons and the lightning maybe representing resistance against energy weapons? Not really sure, it could be attack rating or something for all we know.

EDIT: Yeah seems like those signify damage resistances from looking at thishttp://i.imgur.com/jWllUCr.jpg.

Perhaps DR, and DT are both returning for armor?

Edit: Ah nice....

I would not agree with that. it is different but not necessarily more "basic"

it still seems to show us all the same information but has more of a minimalism look to it, which you may or may not have noticed but minimalism is kind of in ascetically right now. Not just in gaming either.

Have you even seen fallout 3/nv's ui??? Nothing can be more basic than that. The ui in the fo4 gameplay looked much better and easier to use.

I prefer a more aesthetic appearance over a more "drawn together" appearance. The design just looks like a few bars thrown together, imo.

I've played and beaten both a few times. I prefer something that looks nicer. This thread was about design, not usability. Usability wise, it does look much better with all the extra info, even the controls could have been figured out with some good old-fashioned button mashing and control-stick moving.

This UI covers up a greater amount of the screen. It has the ammo being above the AP in big numbers as a vertical fraction than under the AP as a horizontal fraction in small numbers. The enemy health is at the top of the screen now instead of the bottom between HP and AP, and shows more information (which even though I'm ranting about clutter, that info is rather useful). All the controls are hovering above the bottom where enemies could be and shows more controls instead of just showing no controls (there are tutorials you can do, I'm sure). Above that is some sort of Crit bar which probably builds up over time. I can agree I like the information shown, but now I've got things cluttering my screen, especially in V.A.T.S.

Sorry, I'm a console peasant.

You all do have your opinions, and I do have mine. Even though I dislike the design, I think the UI is a good change from the old UIs. I just hope maybe it can get spiced up with some more design, but stay with all the info and placement. Maybe not all the controls at the bottom during V.A.T.S, but all in all it's really well designed. Just needs more oomph and pizzazz, imo.

i agree that i like a more snazzy ui, but as long as a ui isnt hair-tearingly horrible it wont detract from the game any

The new health bar (and basically every bar in the UI) is quite... too simplistic though, but like I always say to myself, let's just how it goes!

It will need some time to get used to though...

Oh! And I hope we got that option to change your UI and pip-boy display colour back again! It's insignificant, but blue UI is somehow friendlier to my eyes...

When I think of screen, I think of the portion of screen that is in my direct vision and the area surrounding. This UI removes stuff from the side which is more important to see than the top or bottom. The enemy bar gives more info and is at the top, with the detailed information closer to the direcf field of view. Lastly, when laid out it takes up a single row across the bottom instead of multiple rows, again avoiding the field of view.

It take up a bit more space on the screen (it is negligible) and I never said it did take up less space. All I said was it makes it a lot cleaner which is better for at a glance gathering of vital information.

It looks OK to me. Clean, functional. Hope I can change the colour, though. That green is a little grating.

Yup, always preferred the amber or blue colour in UI and pip-boy display colour setting...

The UI is definitely more basic, but I dig it. One look and boom, everything's laid out during a fight. That said, I kind of do miss the little bars since they seemed so "future retro," but that could just be my nostalgia talking. It does that.

The elements of the UI and HUD look quit large in my mind so modding them seems once again mandatory. No surprise there. Elements are simpler but way too large.

Beth still doesn't know how to make a space efficient UI.

Yes it certainly does. All that good armor info.

Heh.

Give me my sky blue. :D Maybe one of those color editors for specific coloring.

Yeh, I agree. The only non modded color I liked in FO3 and NV was white. Red (orange) was confusing for enemies and blended in, I'm not a fan of blue since almost every piece of electronics in my household have blue lights, and green got boring.

When I was on PS3, I liked using yellow. Even against the landscape, it stood out.
