FOOK2-Worth it?

Post » Fri May 28, 2010 11:20 am

Is the FOOK2 mod worth it? People on the Nexus forums tend to give it favorable reviews, while people at Gamespot tend to bring it down. I've downloaded EVE, but I don't know if I should download FOOK2 yet. Also, their website is down or something, so is there another place to download the mod?

  • Yes, although I'm sure my opinion is biased.
  • Many people have put a lot of work into it. I just Googled "FOOK + Gamestop" and found http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/fallout3/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-53168561&pid=918428. Doesn't seem to bring the project down as you put it. Almost all of it read as positive.
  • The site is down and has inexplicably vanished. Hopefully, either it or a replacement forum will soon be available for FOOK. You can also download it at the http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4448 in the interim. :)

FOOK2 v1.1 is really close to ready and will include a bunch of new content/bugfixes/improvements over 1.0 and has a huge options menu with all sorts of buttons to configure FOOK however you like.

Alright, so, should I wait for the FOOK2 website and V1.1 to be released or download it now? I've already got FOIP for WMK, MMM, and EVE, but I'm just about ready to download FOOK.

Give 1.0 a shot, I'd say. :) v1.1 will be even better, but there's still not a firm release date as there are still a few things left to fine-tune/playtest.

Will the difference between 1.0 and 1.1 only be in the data files, or will there be more assets to download as well? If there are going to be more assets, are the new assets going to be made available separately? I'm assuming they will, but FOOK2 is a pretty massive download so it's worth making sure before downloading that you won't have to re-download a lot of it in the near future.

Does the FOOK team have a new site? It's been down for like a week now. Kinda sad.

And from what I've read on the forums (before it went down) is that with 1.1 you will need to start a new game to get the full benefits of FOOK2 v1.1
This leads me to believe that the changes made are more then just data files.

Xporc has recently gone through all of the archives and fixed up the filepaths in the ESM's so most of it is grouped together in Meshes\FOOK\ etc, so some of the old files won't be used. 1.1 won't be using an installer, but will be a .7z and probably be FOMOD ready. We could also pack it all in .bsa's, but we're not sure yet. It might turn out that the best way to release 1.1 is as its own package since so much has changed, then 1.0's installer could uninstall all the erroneous assets and wipe the slate clean for 1.1.

KirbKirb20: If you have slow internet or a monthly download cap, you just might want to just wait for 1.1 as 1.0 is a hefty download.

We don't yet have another forum. There was a month old backup, I guess, so there might be hope of the original one returning.

New/old saves: It would definitely be best to start a new game for 1.0, but most everything should carry over. W4NK is merged into the main file. DIK will require all five DLC's/GOTY. Worst case scenario is that you have to save withot FOOK loaded, wait in a lonely interior for 4 game days so everything can reset, then load 1.1 up. *Most of the weapons/armor/etc still have the same Form ID's, so if swapping FOOK files without starting a new game, you'll most likely retain your FOOK items. If you lose anything to the update, you can always use the QA containers accessible via the '=' key and hook yourself up with whatever's missing.

*some had to be changed due to the manner in which Phalanx was merged

Only changes in data files could require a new game to be started.

EDIT:

Thanks for that JustinOther.

NP. I forget sometimes that not everyone has fast internet and/or unlimited download capacity. Thank you, Cipscis, for all of your scripting help and *other contibutions to FOOK. I'd probably still be wading through FookNVGScript trying to get all the new options to work right had it not been for your help :)

*Melee Lock On is so much fun!
