Question about the pipboy app

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 7:05 pm

I'm a bit confused about the app launching with the game

when Todd says a second screen experience, does he mean it actually works with your game?

like you'll be playing, have the app on your phone and click to the radio tab and pick a station, and it'll start in the game without opening the in-game pipboy menu? or switch armor through the app and have it change on your character while playing?

or is it just a fun little thing on the side?

I've never used a second screen experience thing so I don't know what to make of it. The demo for it didn't really help with that for me

you basically answered your own question but yes everything you can do in pip boy you can do on your phone or tablet .

app acts like the pip boy menu in everyway.

So will it switch it in real time? If I click on a gun in the app will it automatically equip it in the game? Or will it still somehow pause my gameplay? Would love to be able to manipulate it in realtime while the game goes on in the background without anything pausing or ruining the immersion.

Thats not bad at all. I doubt I will be using this app in combat. That being said, does anyone know if using the PipBoy pauses time now??

i've seen a lot of apps that 'work with the game', but end up just reading some aspect of your game, then showing you a fun little thing that actually doesn't help any. it just ends up as a fun little toy that kinda reflects some part of your game. asking since we DIDNT see, for instance, using a stimpack in the app, and the health of the actual player increasing in-game.

but thanks for the helpful sarcasm, it definitely doesn't get old on the internet, you cool dude you

I don't recall that it has been stated as to whether using your Pip Boy in game will pause the game, but consider: VATS now slows the action and does not stop it any longer. Conversation no longer pauses the game, the game continues in real time as if you are not in conversation. My GUESS is that using the Pip Boy in game will NOT pause the game, it will just block your view of what is happening, so whether you use the app or in game controls, using your Pip Boy in combat is the sure sign of someone who is suicidal.

I suspect that the utility of this app will vary between gamers. There are some console users that have become quite adept at navigating the Pip Boy's interface using a game controller in FO3 and FONV. For those console gamers and almost all PC gamers, this app will be an interesting toy (well, at first it will be interesting) that will soon be discarded. Everyone else may find it very useful for managing inventory.

{Edit}

Understand, from everything we have seen and been told, you will NOT be able to play the game with the Pip Boy app, you will only be able to use the games Pip Boy functions with the app.

I really hope this is the case. ^^

I don't want the PipBoy to pause time anymore. Makes it much more realistic.

should probably try to answer them with actual answers then since I want to know, instead of just troll bait lines that show you don't know either :sadvaultboy:
i get that that's just you getting your jollies off, but still

better to be a helpful, knowledgable troll than a no-answers troll that's about as useful as a hemorrhoid :woot:

Answer me this then: If Todd Howard saying it works with the game doesn't give you your answer, then how is anyone else going to? If you'd like to think I'm trolling, then please do.

Would you be happy if I told you it worked with the game? What if perhaps someone other than me told you? Some food for thought

I'd rather not start an argument over something so stupid so here goes: It will indeed work in the game, I'm sure you can do all of the things you can do with the pip-boy in-game. You have been told this, but refuse to believe this is the case. I don't know what to tell you, then.

sorry for freaking, your original "He even said it worked with the game..." seemed to suggest you were saying that that vague one-line videogame conference line (which usually comes with a ton of half and 'meh' truths) was somehow a 100% answer to my confusion about the specifics of how second screen experiences worked or could work, followed with your "its a stupid question" bit

I'm not asking for secret details someone got from some secret Todd interview where he goes on record confirming every aspect of the app, just what all the second screen experience spill could end up being, on the lame end and super cool end

your first comment didn't help that at all, unlike everyone esles' helpful speculations and experiences with other second screen game experiences that did shed light on what it could be

but thanks for this more helpful, expanded answer

looks like hemorrhoids do help if you poke them with a stick. Don't see why everyone's always going to the doc or store for creams now

Eh, personally I'm much more interested in a good gameplay experience than with "realism". Being super rushed in interacting with your menus/etc seems like a big gameplay negative, so I certainly hope the pipboy menu works like it did in FO3 & NV.

edit: as for the app..... even though I have a tablet, I doubt I'll use it. Having to take your hands away from your regular input device (mouse & keyboard, or controller) and take your attention away from the game, seems like it'll mostly just be annoying. And that's ignoring having to keep unsleeping your mobile device every time you've spent more than a couple minutes using the app. (Hmm. Unless it disables any sleep modes while the app is running. In which case... woohoo, battery drain. )

tl;dr - the app seems more like an inefficient gimmick, than an actually useful thing.

I apologize, too. It isn't a stupid question. To be completely honest, I don't know how the whole thing is going to work  We can only hope it'll work as intended :)

thats the shatty thing, he went over 'how it was intended' in like one hushed half-sentence

i just wanted to see where that could stand: cool or useless, because how he kinda-described it, it could go either way

I just wish he had a maybe 1-minute side by side of someone like, using a stimpack on the phone and showing the character in-game get a health regen to clear up the vagueness of if it worked like that or not

like how it was clear how the skyrim shouts would work with the kinnect update: they showed a dude shouting dragon words from his couch and the game emulated it with the kinnect sensor, so no real way to be confused there

i'm just blind since he was so short and vague about this feature

I hadn't considered that possibility, and that really excites me. Scrambling behind cover and frantically grabbing a new weapon that will be more effective against your new foe as he rushes towards you? Exciting.
