Sudden slowdown in loading and saving

Hi,

I've hit an odd problem with Oblivion that I had on a previous installation (and computer) so I wonder if anyone else has seen it and knows what causes it.

I've got a ton of mods, but my set-up is very stable and generally crash free (thanks to FCOM and Wrye Bash). But recently the loading bar in complex areas (like cities) has slowed right down. So has the time the game takes to create a save. The weird thing is that I haven't added any mods or texture upgrades recently, and I have no idea why the game is running so slow all of a sudden when it was running smooth as silk just a few days ago.

I'm hoping the problem will go away as spontaneously as it cropped up, but if anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful.

How many files in your saves folder?

When was the last time you defragged the drive that the saves are on, or the drive the game is installed to? How much free space on the drive?
