So I got the game on launch day and while I'm satisfied with my purchase, I'm scourged by a rather odd issue - I cannot launch the game unless my GPU is disabled.

When I try to run Fallout4.exe while my GPU is enabled, I'm met by the infamous black frame and then a few seconds later the program shuts down. This is what I have tried to make it work:

  • Reinstalling the game
  • Reinstalling/updating GPU drivers
  • Running in windowed mode and borderless and/or any combination thereof
  • Running the programs (Fallout4.exe and Fallout4Launcher) as administrator
  • Running the programs in compatibility mode for all available operating systems (Windows Vista, Windows Vista (SP1), Windows Vista (SP2), Windows 7 and Windows 8)
  • Validating game files via Steam
None of the above made the game execute properly. However, when I go to Device Manager and choose to disable my graphics card, I can suddenly launch the game and play it without any greater problems. The settings I have played on, and these seem to work best if you don't do any greater modifications, are as follows:

I am fully aware that my hardware is greatly outdated for a game like Fallout 4. I do however not at all care about good graphics, I simply wish to play the game. While playing the game with my GPU disabled is acceptable, it would be great to play the game with my GPU enabled as that would prevent irritating resolution limits (limit is 1280x720 with my card disabled) and some other things (including easier optimization). Also to note is that I cannot play for example World of Warcraft with my graphics card disabled, it only works with Fallout 4.
I'm grateful for any help. Thanks.

The game will not run on this. It lacks the shader support. No tweak or setting or change will allow it to run. You need a video card to run this game.

I am having this issue as well with my Nvidia Geforce GTX 750ti and so are a lot of other people it seems. No solution that I'm aware of so far.

Alright, thanks. Any idea on why I can run the game with my GPU disabled then, how does that work?

Have you grabbed the latest Nvidia drivers that came out this week? If yes, do you have on CPU graphics? If so, force the game to use the 3D card in the control panel for your video card or tell the system to use High Performance for the Video in Power Options (so that it does not try to use the on CPU graphics)

Because it does not know what video card you have so it bypasses the shader check. It is the lack of shader support that stops the game from launching.

A new problem has come up, possibly related to the fact that the game can't detect my hardware; In Geforce Experience when I try to optimize it there it cannot save my settings for it.

I am having a similar issue where the game fails to launch. I am running a Radeon HD4890 with 1gb of VRAM. Would this card work?
