Fallout 3 to Fallout New Vegas? Are they linked?

Post » Sun May 30, 2010 1:25 am

If you played Fallout 3 and finished it, is there an option in Fallout New Vegas which will let you use your Fallout 3 saved game for bonuses and stuff like that? And if this is true, will the decisions made in Fallout 3 be important in Fallout New Vegas?

Just asking to know if I should finish Fallout 3 again for the saved game.

Nope......Besides maybe a few references and some of the same guns. There will be no connection to Fallout 3.

No. You cant import saves.

EDIT: If for any reason you want to recreate your Fallout 3 character, just recreate them in the character creator. Thats what im doing :)

This. You are playing as a completely new character, the Courier.

No save import. Considering the great distance between the two locations probably your Fallout 3 decisions wouldn't have an impact anyway (after all, the developments on the west coast apparently didn't have an impact on DC either).
They have mentioned that there will be a couple of minor references to Fallout 3, so expect a couple of easter eggs, but that's it I guess.

Frankly, this is a little disappointing. I liked how the new RPGs are getting linked between sequels, especially the import character system which is one of the best innovation in years for RPG games imo.

Thanks for answering my question.

Its not connected then again its not a direct sequel. Fallout 4 may have a connection to Fallout 3, this title-Fallout: New Vegas is a spin off made by some of the original creators. I'm sure Bethesda will link their own story up in the next 'official' Fallout title.

None of the player characters in Fallout games have been directly connected. Also, continuing with saved games from previous games is certainly nothing new. I played games in the mid '80s that allowed you to do that.

Well I'm certainly not feeling any loss over it. It is a spinoff, made in a relatively short time, and not part of the main storyline (Though in my opinion it will be a far more relevant storyline relating to the original two as compared to FO3.) Perhaps you could hope they will do it in FO4?

Oh, I didn't know character import was from way back from the 80s haha. At any rate, I do believe that future rpg sequels should incorporate this function. But, since Fallout New Vegas isn't technichically a sequel,I guess it is true that it shouldn't have this option. Then, I'll have to have higher hopes for Fallout 4 :)

It really only makes sense if the stories of the games are intended to be directly connected. It makes sense for Mass Effect 2, for example, because the stories are written to be connected. If the writers want the next game to be a new story altogether (which has always been the case with the Fallout series) it simply doesn't make sense to do that. It's more of an artistic decision than a lack of capability.

Yeah. Heck, does FO3 even keep track of most of your ingame decisions? I don't think it does. Mass Effect was designed to from day one, but I'm pretty sure that FO3 doesn't.

I'm sure someone will develop some method to import the superficial aspects of a Fallout 3 character to Fallout: New Vegas, but with some key game mechanics changing I don't see anything more than that being viable.

I'm pretty sure that considering some dialogue with your father, it does.
After all, it's as simple (as far as my limited coding skills are concerned, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) as checking a couple of variables (there weren't many important decisions in Fallout 3 after all, though there were a lot of little ones in side quests and such).
So if they wanted to, they could, though again, games aren't connected storywise.

As mentioned, it's not a sequel, much like GTA: San Andreas or GTA: Vice City weren't sequels to GTA 3.

How is it not part of the main storyline?
Because it doesn't have a number on the end?

No they couldnt really. Most of the dialog did not set variables that madea difference. You could say 2 things, but actually do the same action alot of the time. Fo3 didnt have enough of a split storyline (at least the Vanilla game, not including DLC) to make it easy to determince exactly what you did.

t is a known that you can not because this is a new game and stands alone other than any lore that may be used.

Since the question has been answered an this thread is going downhill quickly it is being closed. :)
