Is it really as bad on PC as they say?

If you stick with the keybinds the game gives you, you'll be fine. But if you want to customize your layout, you might run into problems.

For example, in every game I play, I use the arrow keys for movement, the 0 key on the numpad for reload, the Enter key to activate/interact and loot stuff. I know it probably sounds like a weird setup, but it works for me and its comfortable. That is my default keybindings I've been using for years, decades even, in any game I play. If I try this with Fallout 4 I immediately run into problems.

The arrow keys are shared with the building menu, so I can't move. You can't cycle through enemies in VATS with arrows, you have to use WASD, and you can't use the arrow keys when lockpicking either, its A and D.

The numpad is reserved for hotkeying weapons and stimpacks, so I can't use the 0 key for reload (or for anything).

The E key is really odd, I can change it so I can use Enter to pick stuff up off the floor and interact with certain things, but I can't loot anything from containers, you have to use E for that. So my hand is constantly going from one side of the keyboard (the arrow keys) to the other (the E key).

DEL is my pipboy, R Shift is my sprint, L Ctrl is crouch, Page Down is my grenade, no problems there, and stuff like VATS and jump is mapped to my mouse.

I've been able to use a workaround called autohotkey, an external script program that will remap the keys for the game, and between that and switching to a controller whenever I want to do some settlement stuff, I've found a solution that works for me, but its a bit messy.

I use fairly close to the same set up. The arrow keys are the original defaults from the 80's & 90's, until some idiot made the wasd as the default for some release, and it stuck.

Please fix this!!!!!

I see what people are saying then. Although I'm right handed I've always used the right side of the keyboard to bind keys to. Arrows for movement, surrounding keys for various other tasks. Never been comfortable on the WASD layout, big hands with fat fingers I suppose.

I am in exactly the same boat. I also like to use arrow keys for movement but I have used num (0) for "use" (opening doors, containers, initiating dialogue, etc.) since oblivion and map "r' to the mouse for reload. I also like to use the right arrow for lockpicking and now I need to use "w". Playing without the lights on really breaks the immersion when you have to hunt on the keyboard for the right key.

I will try autohotkey.

Auto hotkey has it's issues as well.

This should be addressed by Bethesda.

Please at least let us know if you guys are looking into it, or addressing it, before we all start returning the game, and the bad press for the PC version gets out of hand.

Too late really. High profile youtubers like Gopher are already making videos about it. While I appreciate the fact that people with game-breaking bugs takes priority (as it should) Bethesda needs to get on this quick. And while I'm a huge Bethesda fan, I don't feel bad for them. They know all about the problems with mouse and keyboard issues in their games, because people have brought it up in the past. So there's really no excuse for this. It doesn't just end at keybinding either, anyone who uses a mouse to interact with the terminals in the game knows how innacurate the mouse is.

The bottom line is this: they spent a lot of time testing the game with a controller, and very little effort was put into the mouse and keyboard experience, and it shows.

Just checked on Steams refund policy, and it seems it's 14 days.

Hopefully Bethesda will patch, or at least respond to this by next week, or I'm sure many refunds will be requested & issued.
