Fetch

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 5:31 am

So in the E3 presentation, we saw the player giving orders to the dog to fetch that wrench. Do you think this is a useful feature? I mean you've got to press the command button, highlight what you want to be picked up, then the companion whoever or whatever's AI figure out the order then has to path it's way there, (notice that slight delay on the dog, where it turned slightly then back?) pick it and bring it over to you. Surely, it would be quicker and easier to just do it yourself? Simply walk to it and pick it up, bam, done.

I'm trying to think of a situation where this could be useful. What do you guys think?

it may just be for some flavor

you could do it in skyrim and it didn't really give you much advantage except for companions opening locks, but it didn't hurt anything either

though i guess some quests could involve you ordering a companion to man controls while you went and did something, or maybe some things only dogmeat can reach because they're in a sewer pipe or something, stuff like that

if not, then it's just a little bonus feature

If you wanted to stir up any critters in a room. Send the pooch in to "fetch" something and then shoot anything that attacks your pooch.

Depends if you can use it to steal stuff in stores. NPC shopkeeper and/or guard AI is usually a bit daft.

Hopefully Dogmeat knows the difference between a grenade and a baseball.

:D

If he can pick it all up at once rather than one by one, then that could be really useful.

Yeah, I remember a quest in Skyrim where you had to command a follower to activate a shrine, so you could err, kill them on it. It was the only one that used it though IIRC. Could have seen more use.

Good ideas there. Hopefully it's possible.

combined with his invincibility it'd be a real cheap way to clear minefields (although the dog might object more than a little)

I still think it'd be cool if you could teach Dogmeat and Cogsworth how to "fetch" items. Instead of highlighting a certain item you want, you tell them "Find a baseball," and they search the area. If they find one, they bring it back to you. If you tell them to find something like a stove or a safe, they'll alert you that they've found it, but obviously can't bring it to you.

I also hope there's an actual way to throw baseballs so you can play fetch with the dog.

No, it's a gimmick that will be useful only in the cases that will be specifically designed for it, i.e. places where you cannot get, but the dog can.

i think dogmeat could do that in fo3

i remember he could scrounge up nearby ammo or something if told to

but yeah, i doubt there'd be a specific system to ask for specific items

'dogmeat, find a [scroll through 135,000 objects in 8,000 submenus]' XD

maybe at most some general options like 'find some nearby guns and ammo; clothing and armor; stuff i can craft with; food and meds' etc

He could do a very limited version of it. I'd rather there be a system that allowed you to show him an item that he'd memorize, with a set number of items he could memorize at a time (let's say 6). After that, if you try and teach him a new one, he'd forget the first one you taught him.

True this. I can already see having the dog fetch some item far along a path surrounded with mines. His speed will just be enough to trigger the mines but not get caught in the explosion.

they had a simiilar system in skyrim where you could boss your companions around aswell , this just seems more elaborate

also i can notice how they are overselling this stupid dog , makes me wonder why , my guess they still didn't fixed the companions AI

Do you remember in Morrowind? You finally manage to get the people in a city to actually like you, by helping them out a tonn. Then suddenly - you loot a fork by mistake. The guy to your left - you saved his son. The guy to your right - you restored his stolen family legacy. But when you pick up that fork you signed your death warrant. These guys who idolize you, suddenly unsheathes enchanted two handed mauls and blades - the barkeep starts shooting fireballs. "YOU N'WAAAAAH!" is the last thing you hear as your cold dead body drops the mistakenly looted fork to the ground.

Thats why this is a good feature. You can send the dog to loot stuff. Without half the town screaming the fallout equalent of "DIE OUTLANDER!" as you do so.

The firelance event will demand it again. Damn those alien cells!

And imagine Dogmeat carrying a beeping mine back to you as he gets closer. "No dogmeat, no!"

Duck shooting would also be fun. Lol.

Assuming you can do this with impunity in F4. In Skyrim you yourself still get blamed for the theft.

I see what you're saying but you said it yourself, looting a fork is more by accident, rather than intentional.

you can also ask your companions to scout the buildings for you.. thats why the dog paused before entering to grab the wrench if you noticed it was looking left and right to make sure it was safe... but before he hovered over the wrench there was an option to have the dog scout the building itself probably for enemies or something.. so instead of risking your own life you can have your companion check out areas for you instead.

Ah was there? I missed that. I didn't see the option.

Edit: or did you mean inspect, it came up as inspect workbench when he focused on it.

this was in skyrim already, and me, i just seem to be too stupid to use it, i could activate that mode 2 or 3 times by accident no idea how, but never on purpose...

so i sure hope it'll be more usefull than THAT at least :-)

I wonder if the Dog will be as useful as the one in MGSV, or just another damage-sponge/gimmick:

I know, I just wondered if it's of any more use in F4. I never used it much in Skyrim either. Apart rom that one shrine quest.

There was a quick way to do it, think it was hold activate for a few seconds when focused on them. Or you could ask them to do something whilst in dialogue, and do it like that.

That would probably be the best use for it, I think. As well as distraction. But my main concern is that companions will ruin stealth by rushing in or get spotted before you can give them the command to attack. Probably for the best he's essential.

yeah, that's what the "manual" said. just that that in fact causes my pc to do all kind of unspeakables to it's vis-a-vis, but not that. :-)

aw they do that anyway. that's totally the reason why i (stealth / ranged player mainly) almost never run with companions*

they ruin my stealth

they shoot before i do

they don't stop fighting when i do (like, when i [censored] sheathe means don't [censored] shoot first at yet unaware enemies)

and worst of all when i carefully sneak into some overpowered enemy stuffed place, and they'll like jump up behind me and run ahead through half the place, waving pom-pom's and screaming "hey raiders, your mother!!".... (heard rumours some companions even bring marching bands) :-)

* except for raoul in fnv, dunno maybe that was just me, but i had the impression he mostly didn't attack before i did, and he could sneak, for once...

all others i ever ran with, i had to make them wait in some off place before entering anywhere (if i wanted to come out alive anyway)
