He showed up for me, near the end. I couldn't kill him before they teleported me out but I'm sure it's possible.

The institutes ending was awful for me - they can extend kelloggs life by 60 years without an ounce of aging yet.. They can do nothing about their leader dying (surely if he was raised since infancy - he'd have had procedures done to him to prolong life)

I mean, every other faction has its perks - brotherhood being a good supply of PA and vertibirds, minutemen having settlement-esque upgrades and the railroad having excellent covert mods/weapons to unlock

Yet.. The institute- the most advanced group - and you being the pre war father of their leader and even later on being elected to take over..

And all you're given is a grenade that is hard to come by and spawns in some synths that die almost instantly.. Yeyy

What the Institute did to Kellog is described as having all sorts of incredibly disturbing complications.

Not repeatable.

Basically, he's a Synth with a human brain.

There is no ounce of dialoge, terminal logs or holotapes that confirm this cannon, sorry to say.
Its merely stated he had procedures done to him to inhibit pain, prolong his life and give him inhuman abilities.
Sure, you can imagine that was the case but cannon practically dictates otherwise, making no sence

If that was the case hed be atleast the equivalent of a courser, being the lead in the institue wasteland dealings but even virgil says that a courser is a harder kill than kellogg.

Again, will ALL that tech, the leader of the institue dies at 60 and regardless of how idiotic you make your family look - his young and elderly face wont change. Whereas todd had stated that he was generated based off your characters.

Only logical reasoning is that they didnt want to "taint" the perfect pre war specimen with metals that had endured a nuclear fallout since they needed his DNA to produce genetic based synths

Pretty sure Kellog is confirmed to be human. He had implants (possibly synth) but he's most definitely human.

Survivor says he's more machine than human.

Shaun's face doesn't change? He looked almost exactly like my own character with white hair and a beard in my game. Was I psychic and made a Shaun-lookalike at cc?

Yeah, I was wrong about Kellog.

Double checked.

I got confused.

My bad.

He looks very similar to the default SS face, so if you altered your PC slightly or made small adjustments only, he will look very similar to your SS.

Well, in my game he looks like this: https://40.media.tumblr.com/235b82c73cd31ea59d7f2d57c67eb4c1/tumblr_nyeyp9cUlg1u939ubo4_1280.jpg Is this what he's like in all playthroughs? If so, that's a bit disappointing, though it's not that much of an issue for me.

Different eyes than mine and much lighter skin.

Mine looks like he's half-black, half-Japanese, half-Targaryen.

Then I assume it's only the coloring that changes? Oh well. Like I said, was expecting more, but it's not a big deal. Also your Shaun sure sounds interesting... ;)

Because of the implaints most likely. And I assume because of cybernetic limbs. Enhancing ones life comes at a cost. Regardless, he has a brain. And he's human or he wouldn't age (before the implants that prolong his life). Even if you attempt to use Gen 3 synths, keep in mind how old Kellog is. Way before that time. They still hadn't even made gen 1s look even remotely human.

I just assumed some of those implants in Kellogg where like, devices that cleaned his blood, improved cardiovascular, stuff like that.

He may even have had an implant for oxygen recycling. According to the novel version of Revenge of the Sith (far superior to the movie, by the way, I recommend reading it), Darth Vader describes his auto lungs as being very painful.

I like to think being a Cyborg to be a very uncomfortable experience.

No, at least the eye shape changes too. The hair stays the same or relatively the same. I haven't tested it comprehensively, but it's a fair assumption that other small changes to other facial features are made. For example, it may just be my imagination since there's not much variation in this in the first place, but the cheek bones seem to vary in shallowness in different versions of Father.

He had certain features from the 2 parents I created for him, so das wrong. His eye shape, nose shape and skin tone were all different from the other Shauns I've seen.

Only constant thing was hair/beard

You can actually have a conversation with Shaun about how procedures MUST exist to prolong his life and help him, and he admits that the Institute does have treatments that could extend his life, but the side effects are horrible, and he doesn't want to go on living that way.

I recall something similar but it was vauge and never directly implies that the procedures have horrifying side effects - he merely didnt want to have those sorts of procedures done to him, which makes no sence to be quite honest.
Yet him and the institutes doctor had been up day and night for years trying to divise treatments for him.

It was a cancerous ailment, wasnt it? They can de-assemble a human on a molecular RF-wave level and re-assemble them elsewhere (their teleportation) yet under no circumstances can they remove or otherwise hinder any form of cancer in any way?

If you could list what "horrifying effects" happened to kellogg that arent a part of his past (his violence, short leesh, triggerhappy, merc-like) then please, do. Id like to look into it..

I mean.. Bethesda doesnt make 10/10 sence but this is one of my few pet hates with F4 - with shaun, theres one moment where you were COMPLETELY clueless - then? Hes just some cannon defying NPC that neither feels like he was your ever your son (especially in terms of looks; his eyes are literally the only describable feature that changes over playthrough)

I think the very fact that Shaun doesn't want the procedures is enough to imply they have horrifying side effects.

I also think he's suicidally depressed on some level.

Whether that's because of his illness or it's simply caused him to take a long hard look at his life is anyone's guess.

Kellogg isn't a synth. I think Shaun's terminal goes into detail explaining that the scientists are jealous of him because the tech used on Kellogg isn't really used anymore.
