Really unimpressed with the SPECIAL UI Screens...

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 2:13 am

I don't know how most around here feel about it, but I have nothing good to say about it.

http://www.rpg-gaming.com/fo4.html?n= for reference.

Even something as simple as "poor, average, great, heroic, etc." tags with each increment in F1/2 gave it more depth. Not too mention the "You're SPECIAL!" book in F3. But the best one, imo, was the "Vit-O-Matic Vigor Tester" in NV with it's brief taglines along each level of SPECIAL; "wet noodle, unsuspecting trout, creepy undertaker, etc."

It just brings more life into character creation instead of what we see here. I'm not impressed, It feels like it was just...tacked on last minute instead of having a design based around it. Can't say I have much love for the UI in game-play either, it's minimal which I do like but something about it just doesn't blend well for me.

There are things I don't like about the UI either and the SPECIAL UI is definitely not high on my list. Still, you have a point, the Vault-Tec rep was carrying a clipboard and it would have been a great opportunity to have the clipboard handed to the character and the character interacts with it while we fill in the necessary information.

Missed opportunity.

That's a pretty kewl little link! The Vit-o-magic was super kewl but I do its only on the screen for five-ten minutes max so i dont really mind. Thanks for the link though.

You do know there will be mods to UI?

Its usually among some of the first mods out the gate.

As far not getting told what the number value of a stat is, I rather enjoy the minimalism of it, and, it leaves an element of mystery to the valuation of the stats as compared to the rest of the world.

For instance, is a super mutant's strength 10? or can stats be calculated higher? How do items that boost stats work if a stat is boosted over 10?

Is 10 the highest Human value where other characters in the game like deathclaws and super mutants might be allowed stats greater than 10 in some instances?

It'd be kind of bleh if someone has a strength of 10, and they put on power armor that's suppose to increase strength, but, game mechanics-wise, you're already pegged at 10 so power armor, or even superman's hand up your butt using you like a puppet won't take you past 10.

meh.

I spend less than 5 minutes figuring out what I want in the first playthrough. 30 seconds in the subsequent playthroughs. I am not going to worry about something that will be less than .000000001 percent of my game.

Can SPECIAL go above 10? If you STR is 10 and it find ??? that increases STR by 1 point can you not use it? If you have 10 STR and can use chem ??? to increase STR does it work? Is 5 Average? Does below 5 have negative effects? Etc.

Tons of questions about SPECIAL in this game. Really hope we get more details soon.

Also the SPECIAL screen might get updated prior to release. Hope so. It is rather bland.

If 5 was the "average" with anything below that giving penalties and anything above 5 giving bonuses, what would you set your stats to on that page for Fallout 4?

Im thinking:

Strength:7

Perception:4

Endurance:5

Charisma:1

Intelligence:5

Agility: 5

Luck:1

Im no meta gamer but i like the carry weight from strength even though i never really use melee or unarmed. I like the Hit points from Endurance and i will probably use sprint as often as possible, when not sneaking. Perception so im not completely lost with VATS. Intelligence is supposed to be for experience but im assuming it will effect things like hacking and repair. Agility so i can sneak... Ive never been very lucky and since i'll be strong enough to carry lots of stuff I am hoping it wont matter that i dont find the good stuff. Charisma has me scared though... It seems like followers and dialogue may rely heavily on charisma... ive never worried about paying full price at the bartering table though.

Yeah, this will be like the first mod on day 1 after release (after the first nvde mod, of course).

Looks fine to me - it's a registration form !

In that example '4' is the average, so I'll need to think very hard about where to spend the points...

Which stat helps with aiming outside of VATS? I want to play a sniper, but other than AGI for hiding, not sure what else to pick.

Seriously though there's going to be at least 3 "improved" UI's on Nexus/Steam workshop/the unmentionable mod sight/ Xb o n e within a week of them dropping GECK4.0.

Given that that entire scene only lasts a min or so.... I'm surprised they even put as mutch effort into it as they did.
