Fallout 4 started crashing after 40 hours gameplay, PLS HELP

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 8:24 pm

Hey people!

BACKGROUND:

I am desperate here! I have been playing Fallout 4 for 40 hours now and now the game is unplayable for me. When I first started playing the game, I had the keyboard/mouse not detecting bug and the terminal bug, but I have fixed those (sort of, the terminal bug occurs randomly rarely).

When I played yesterday, I had to alt+tab while doing something, and the whole game went black. The game would not respond, so I tried to open the task manager, but I couldn't select it because the game was prioritized. It ended up with either shutting off the PC or logging off. I logged off because that was faster. When I now try to start playing, it crashes between 1-3 minutes of gameplay. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the game crashes at certain places only. Sometimes I can play much longer, but as soon as I go back to places I have crashed before, it crashes again (svcks when you have the main quest there)...

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT CRASHES:

The game freezes as a screen tear goes through the middle of the screen. After a few seconds, the game shuts down back to desktop. When I enter Steam it says 0% Sync. It then downloads something (0-100%) which takes usually a few minutes. ONE time the textures turned incredible white and green-ish while in a conversation with a NPC. It lasted around 10-20 seconds before the game finally freezed and shut down.

WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR:

  • I have tried re-installing the game (Didn't work).
  • I have tried "Verify game cache" which told me that 1 file was missing/damaged and would be re-acquired (Didn't work).
  • I have tried enable window-borderless (Didn't work).
  • My graphics card driver is up to date.
  • I have tried turning down the Hz (have a 144 Hz monitor), didn't work.

PC SPECS:

  • AMD Radeon HD R9 390 series 8GB
  • Intel i7 4790k 4.0 Ghz
  • 16GB RAM 1600Mhz
  • SSD 500GB
  • Windows 10 64-bit
  • BenQ XL2411T 144Hz Monitor

I hope this info helps! I have been loving the game so far, and I am not interested in quitting! Please help me, brilliant tech geniuses :D

Just curious and not that you have to start over............what happens in a new game?

You can also try refreshing the ini files. C:\..........\Documents\My Games\Fallout4 (3 ini files). You can back them up first if you like.

Hey Kenso33, just to check - do you have v-sync enabled? You said you turned down the monitor so it wouldn't be running at 144hz, what did you set it to?

Can we see a dxdiag behind spoiler tags to take a closer look please?

Not sure what you meant by 'new game', and refreshing the dni files did not help :/

They mean if you start a new game does the issue persist with that character?

It's possible you have save game corruption on the current character and starting a new game to verify if works can help decern if this is the case.

It could be something else but lets start with trying a new character simply for testing purposes.

I mean, if it works, then I'm not sure if I even want to play the game. 40 hours of gameplay, only to begin a new? I tried playing on a save 4 hours behind, but 5 minutes in I couldn't do it anymore, knowing how much stuff I had to do again.

Also, does choosing "New Game" delete the old?

It's just for testing purposes at this stage.

Nope. You can switch between characters in the menu. Select 'Load' instead of 'Continue' then the letter 'T'. Select old or new character/s from there.

Hey kenso33,

If you're still experiencing this issue, you can try the following workaround for monitors with high refresh rates.

Many issues related to the game's physics can be traced to manual tweaking of the game's .INI file in order to try and uncap or raise the game's max framerate. These types of issues can also occur if the game/launcher incorrectly detects monitors that are set to refresh rates above 120Hz as being set to 120Hz.

In general, you are advised to keep the game's default settings and continue to play the game with a 60fps cap. The fps cap that the game uses is determined by the your monitor refresh rate (typically 60Hz or 120Hz), and dividing it by the "iPresentInterval" value.

Please note that if your monitor is set to 60Hz, the iPresentInterval value in your .INI file should be "1", and if your monitor is set to 120Hz, the iPresentInterval value should be "2". Setting it to "0" uncaps the framerate and can cause the issues mentioned above. If your monitor is set to a value larger than 120Hz (such as 144Hz), they are advised to set their desktop refresh rate to 120Hz instead, when playing the game.

In some cases, running the game in Borderless Windowed Mode can help. To do so from the Fallout 4 launcher, click Options, then check the Windowed Mode and Borderless checkboxes at the bottom.

I'm happy you're determined to fix my framerate issue, but I don't think that is the cause of my crashing. High framerate is usually the cause of the terminal bug (where you're stuck), which I have already fixed. Now I'm unable to play normally because of the game shutting down. I'm suspecting corrupted game/save files.

Alright, I will test this as soon as I am able. I will post the results afterwards.

Hey kenso33,

Occasionally the refresh rate you have set can cause some unexpected issues, which was the main reason we wanted to provide those steps. Please be sure to let us know if you're still having problems after testing out a new save! As always, you can contact customer support at https://help.bethesda.net/app/ask

I've encountered 2 new problems now..

First: AMD has updated their interface, and I can't seem to find where you adjust the refresh rate. I believe it's on 144Hz now, but I'm not exactly sure.

Second: When I exit the vault on my new save, I can't move. Everything functions properly until that moment. My mouse works (I can shoot and look around etc.), but my keyboard won't respond (Alt-Tab works luckily). I've tried pressing ESC and numerous other buttons, with no luck. The game did not crash at all on the new save though.

I have no idea what to do..

The refresh rate is under display settings in windows. Apparently the crimson doesnt replicate anything windows can do.

RIght click the desktop and select display settings. DIsplay should be delected on the left vertical menu. Select advanced display settings. Bottom click adapter properties.

Click monitor tab and select the refresh rate.
