What's the Movement Like?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 9:18 pm

Now I know some of you ain't gonna have a clue what I'm talking about, and you'll swear there ain't nothing wrong with it, but just hear me out.

Remember in Oblivion and Fallout 3? Remember the way walking/running and looking around looked? Then Fallout NV didn't really improve on that. Your character didn't feel 'connected' to the world; it felt like he was just sliding around all over the place. Skyrim improved on this, and the character's movement animations revolved and everything, but there was still room for improvement.

I think it is called 'omnidirectional movement', what I'm wanting. For the character movement and matching animations to be a little more... 'up to date', if you will. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and if so, how's the movement in Fallout 4?

I'm pretty scared to check out the gameplay trailer since it starts at the very beginning of the game.

From what I remember, Sole Survivor moved much like the Courier did...

In my opinion it is good and the characters movement is much better compared to previous fallout games

I know exactly what you're talking about; for some reason Beth games have always felt really floaty; as you say, it's like your character isn't physically connected to the world, but are rather just sliding around on a blanket of air. I really hope Beth is able to make the character movement feel more physical and grounded, but I'm not holding my breath; I'm guessing it's something pretty inherent in the game engine.

I have heard more oddball concerns.
Once upon a time on the Fallout 3 board, someone posted about having an issue with the game because the Rivet City fast travel point on the map didn't put him where he thought he should be.
Why was this an issue? To this day no one has been able to translate the five page wall of text of cray.

I just hope they fixed the running animations. Its bad enough how slow you jog - but its even worse when it feels like a tank trying to react to things.

Must be third-person players problems.

From the E3 demo it looked a lot better but you would need to get your hands on the controller to really get a sense of whether or not we're still going to glide all over the place.

And jumping - the default jumping animation is a weak jump with BOTH feet forward. Either Fallout New Vegas changed this or (more likely) my New Vegas Reanimated mod tweaked it so that when you jump you actually extend one leg when you leap (while moving). I also notice that when I move purely to the left, my character's feet actually cross each other as she side-waddles, which is much better than just SLIDING to the side. Only time I use first person is when sniping or if I need to focus in on something small to pick up.

From what I can tell it still looks a little disconnected, but it seems to be a big improvement from Fallout 3 :)

From what we've seen already, I think the movement looks a lot better. It still seemed a wee bit glide-ey in the pre-war footage, where the people were running up the hill.

On the bright side, we've come a long long way from the Morrowind Shuffle.

lol, yeah I know right.

It is a big problem for third person players. I like third person cause I like to see my character, especially in games where customization is pretty common. Customizing your character, making them look cool in certain armors doesn't really hold much effect if you're in first person all the time.

But I think since these games are first and foremost first person games, that's where the third person suffers. It doesn't translate to well.

It just looks so damn horrible sometimes.

When I think good third person and npc movements, I think GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption, which to me had some of the best character animations I've seen in a long time. But those games were designed to enhance third person perspective. I tend to play these games in first person myself, while occasionally scoping my characters sixiness, but being in first person is where I get my immersion kick while I'm out kicking rocks.

I literally can't remember ever walking anywhere in Morrowind. Had to level that Acrobatics skill so I skipped just everywhere. If I was moving, I was jumping. I liked to think everyone in the world thought my characters were mildly crazy.

http://gfycat.com/LoathsomeKindChipmunk is the only improvement I've seen so far. It'll probably be a mild improvement much as Skyrim was to FO3. (Pulled from https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/3ak3sl/the_two_most_underrated_creation_engine/ reddit page.)

I wondering if they will ever let us "climb" per se I'm not asking for any type of rock climbing. But when there is a damn ledge you can pull yourself up to but you have to go ALL the way around the dungeon cave vault or whatever to get to that certain point I mean come on!
