Fallout 4 and a steam controller

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 6:47 pm

So both this game and the steam controller release on the same day. I am very excited for both(obviously) and this will be the first game I use with the new controller. Anyway, im curious if they will include day one controller support, because then I could just have the steam controller emulate an xbox pad and not have to do any fiddling around with the control schemes.

Also, im curious if anyone else will be using the new controller with this game? Should be a pretty cool option to have in addition to M&K.

The point of the Steam controller is that you don't need games to support it, since it's configurable. You can map the K&M settings to it through Steam, or you can use it in xbox mode (I'm pretty sure it will have xbox controller emulation as a standard feature).

Personally, I'll stick to K&M. The FPS shooting in FO4 looks good, so I don't want to be messing around with a pad.

Yes, I know its configurable, but when I get fallout messing around with control schemes is the last thing ill want to do. Which is why I said

If I have to configure, I will, my point is it would be convenient to NOT have to do that here.

That's why I mentioned using it in xbox mode. If you like the default gamepad set-up in FO4, put the game in controller mode and the Steam controller will emulate an xbox controller. There is absolutely no question that the game will ship with full controller support.

Fallout 3 had native controller support (at least for the 360 controller), which is the standard controller for PC gaming, so there is no reason to assume Fallout 4 won't be the same. In which case the Steam controller will work without any need for configuration.

I see I see, very good. For some reason I thought the last two games didnt have controller support on pc. Which is why I was curious.

Well, that mixed with my excitement.

Sorry, I misunderstood your initial question to be about Steam controller support. It's pretty rare these days for a cross-platform title to not have xbox controller support on PC. They've already had to work out the control scheme for xbox, and some PC players like to use a pad, so why not include it? FO3, FONV, and Skyrim all had native gamepad support, so we can reasonably expect it in FO4.

Besides, I'm pretty sure the E3 demo was running on a PC, but it was clearly being played with an xbox controller, so obviously they already have it working.

Its all good man, I'm just glad to have my concerns put to rest on the subject.

And I didnt even think about the e3 demo being on pc, thats a great point.

Well if this was multiplayer I would agree. But if your not fighting other players a controller is fine. I generally prefer movement with a controller over wasd, and the precision a mouse offers is pretty much overkill for going up against AI.

Meh never understood this mentality, ultimately the only strength K+M have over gameplay is the amount of buttons on the keyboard and even that is a advantage that not many fps care about using.

speed and accuracy. You can get FAR more accurate with a mouse then you ever could with a Controller, no matter how good you are with a controller. The input is also faster on a K&M.

When it comes to competitive or multiplayer shooters I completely agree with you, but in singleplayer games it doesn't really matter.

I wonder if it now setup for a x box one remote instead of a 360. I have never tried to use a XBOX 1 remote with my pc before. Anyone know?

Yep this isn't battlefield or twitch-shooters like unreal. There's no k/d in fallout.

I"m personally just going to use the 3j60 controller again, probably the best damn controller ive ever used. Also kb/m is more accurate than anolog sicks, but i find using the keyboard uncomfortable compared to leaning back with a controller

I'm a couch PC guy. Use Xbox one controller all the time, wouldn't ever go back to 360. Drivers came out for it ages ago. Waiting to see if the roccat sova ever comes out as there aren't a lot of other options that work well.

I once tried to play FO3 with a controller. I was killed by a turret before I could manage to get my cross-hair lined up anywhere near it.

fine control over movement speed (K+M uses 3 extra buttons for this and it's clunky), mini games developed to feel more immersive with controller (especially unlocking mini game in all former games), speed in optimised menus (like the dialog wheel and the command whell for the dog. there are now 4 options and you press the button in an instant). With mouse you have to "aim" first (or press the right button on the keyboard. works with Skyrim, but less so with FO 3 since the menu buttons can not be reasigned. will probably not be an issue with FO 4).

on the plus side for K+M we have better and faster aiming and looking around. which is mariginalized in FO due to VATS (and auto aim).

while i do prefer K+M, too, i would not say there are NO benefits to using a controller. ALSO: controller when sitting on the couch.

Personally I do it because using a keyboard and mouse in shooters makes things embarassingly easy.
