Are we getting ripped off?

I'm sure there are a still a few people out there who want to make some bling, like Benny and his silver plated 9mm. I'm also sure that women still love accessories.

sure - but if you go to all the trouble of finding said bling, what do you get in return? I would demand a high price for something if someone wanted it really really badly.

Thanks for the info Demon, very very helpful. Makes sense now.

ehow did the east coast get into bottle-cap currency anyway? Did the Brotherhood introduce the idea? The Enclave? The Commonwealth?

It's never explained, I would assume that there's trade going on between the two coasts since the Capital Wasteland also has Jet and Tales of Junktown, and the Mojave has the Wasteland Survival Guide. Traders from the west probably brought the idea over to the east coast at some point.

See, I thought my experience with the gold might be exactly what the designers were going for. In an attempt to bring unique items back to the Mojave (seeing as how I'd probably only have one chance to do so) I became a bit of a pack rat. When I saw the gold bars, I immediately thought "omigawd shinee!" and dove in like the greedy bastard I am.

Turns out, one gold bar left me over encumbered. Like, severely. Like, beyond the capabilities of Buffout. Like, so over encumbered that I contemplated what other items I was willing to sacrifice.

Long story short, I made two attempts to finish Dead Money while keeping my precious gold brick. After dying both times, I came to the difficult conclusion that I might be forced to leave the treasure behind. For the terms of role-playing, please refer to the collapse of the cave in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.

you could make gold into armour, but it is generally too soft, won't stop a bullet. Steel or an alloy is a better choice

Wait, doesn't benny say some clever line right at the beginning of the game in that cinematic about his gun being a "14 karat run of bad luck" or something? Doesn't that imply gold? I completely overlooked that! :o

Ya, that'd be the most logical explanation.

As for the use of gold, all that comes to mind is electronics and energy weapons. The Brotherhood of Steel would find use out of gold for repairing their equipment with proper material rather than substitute material that they no doubt had to adapt for their own use.

Now when I think of gold in the american wasteland, one thing comes to mind - what happened to Fort Knox?
