Immediate full system crash on game startup

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 6:28 am

Hey gang, long time Bethesda fan, etc. Wsup.

Im not sure if this is the same error as others so I'm making my own thread. I know the game is fresh off the line and bugs may iron out in a few days but...

The game crashes my entire computer as soon as the screen blanks for startup. No logo no animation, no nothing. I know it's a full crash as my keyboard LCD clock freezes the system time as soon as the game begins. I installed the game first on slightly older Gforce drivers with the same result [except that the 'Please Stand By' animation began, held for a second or two, then crashed as well with some audio noises momentarily after]. Updated to latest available drivers and no help.

  • Any other dxdiag info needed, just ask....

Built the rig myself [I have a long history of building my gaming rigs, and have lots of beta experience], zero problems with any other app or game. Appreciate any insight, and fixes as soon as is possible. Really want to play, this is a big PITA, and the usual invective-filled frustration can be assumed. Thanks.

OK, Firstly, this issue is [censored], we've all been there, 30 different drivers, reinstalled 20 times, i just about lost a kilo of hair with stress, lol.
Secondly, my computer is not under-powered, please check the minimum specs before anything else. I have a i53330 @3.80GHz, 16GB ram, multiple SSDs, and a GTX 960 4GB.
Thirdly, I tried many "tips" to get it working first, including altering my ini which did nothing lol.

So, basically, right click the fallout 4 icon on your desktop, then go to properties.
Now, make sure that it isnt set to open as admin in the "compatibility" section.
Next thing to do is navigate to Documents (my documents on older systems) to find your "My Games" folder.
Find the folder named "Fallout 4" and delete it.

Open the game and enjoy... at least i did. Good luck and have fun guys :)

I appreciate your issue and desire for official help. Crashes to from launcher, crashes in game, and your type of crash have been reported since the minute this game launched without any response from Bethesda. I really hope they come out with something soon, but I wouldn't hold your breath for it bud :(. Best of luck.

I can't get past the launcher myself.

    No worries.

I'm aware of the pattern of graphic-heavy game releases. I guess the more info they get, the quicker possible solutions are to come out.

The first wave of we buyers are always beta testers ;)

Update, few days later since no official word nor help has shown up yet:

A new Nvidia driver set is out and installed. Problem remains identical. Not my drivers.

Time to put a game fix out, gentlemen.

You won't get official help on the Bethesda forums so it's better to accept help from people who are just trying to be friendly, dude.

I had the same problem. After pressing play at the loading screen that has option, support etc. I would press play, screen goes black for a second then FO4 closes outright without any evidence.

To get it to work try going to your Windows program compatability troubleshooter. click next to show the list of programs.. FO4 wasnt there for me. select the one that says "not listed"

on the browser navigate to your steam folder in program files, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout this was my location. select the main program, not the launcher. then run the compatability troubleshooter on it. use its fix. if its not that one then try the launcher on in the same spot. this worked for me!

    Hello folks,

Have you tried disabling the Steam overlay?

Under certain conditions It is known to cause startup crash in Fallout 4.

    Hope this helps.
