Idea: Next-Gen "Getting Hit" Markers

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:18 pm

Hi!

In Fallout you can get hit in 6 different places: head, torso, both legs and both arms. It is possible to have "getting hit" markers to display, not only which direction the blow came from, but also which area the blow landed on.

This is how the system would work:

  • All hitmarkers are in the shape of a half-circle. ( = getting hit from the left, ) = getting hit from the right, U = getting hit from behind.
  • The placement of the hitmarker on the screen, indicates which limb was hit. Lower left corner = left leg, middle left side = left arm, top middle = head, low middle = torso.
  • The half-circle shows which direction the blow came from, and the placement of the half-circle on the screen shows which limb got hit.

Thoughts?

(I am not allowed to link to a picture on these forums so I had to use my words to explain!)

I think you can link to things after 15 or 20 posts to the forums (something like that).

For purposes of gameplay it would actually be nice to know when fire is coming from above, specifically.

As a thing that can be toggled on/off by the player in the preferences, sure why not.
For me there is more than enough hand holding in the game(s) already.

Yeah, you need certain amount of days, and certain amount of posts before you can post links (don't know how much exactly, it wasn't in place when i arrived for Fallout 3 :hehe:). Embedding images is disabled here.

On topic, is that really needed? Your limbs are going to get crippled regardless, and that complex hit indicators might get in the way. I always use a mod to disable the stupid screen blood effect too.

How is something hand-holding if it tries to emulate a sense you have in real life?

Hand-holding would be automatically turning your player to the direction of fire and then shooting the weapon for you...

We've already seen them include hit markers of a sort in the gameplay demo; a red crescent pops up around the crosshair from whatever direction we took damage in. Indicating limb damage would be a bit trickier; maybe certain parts of the crosshair itself could light up based on a corresponding limb taking damage. That could still work with a variety of weapon-specific crosshairs, so long as each of them has a central dot and five lines for each extremity.
