Personally i always felt after listening to the recordings in Lonesome Road that ED-E was a male, just my impression however

Well he did have a gun . . . down low if you know what I mean....
Why are you trying to assign gender to a robot? If it hasn't said it by now, assume it's identified as non-sixual or asixual.
I personally think that the dog will have little backstory, Codsworth is already part of yours and thus easier to include, and Preston and Piper already sound like they are going to be pretty interesting (they already seem to be on track to comparing to NV Companions). As for the other companions, I believe that the Pirate Ghoul, a Brotherhood Member (possibly Maxson if it's later than 2277), the Super Mutant you're fighting alongside in the E3 Demo, an Android, probably another female or male human (I think Maxson) or more, and I honestly hope an Alien stranded here after the Mothership Zeta was taken over.
Why do you care if i assign a machine a gender? I can do whatever i want
Actually Bethesda claims the companions have a lot of personality.
"We track how [each companion] feels about you," Howard says. "With the humans, it can even lead to romances and that is regardless of whatever gender you are playing. We spent a lot of time on this mechanic. They have a lot of personality. You can also play without a companion, and we have special perks for if you want to play as kind of a lone wanderer."

What about Veronica?!
Nevermind she just died because she tried to fight 7 Cazadors.
She's cool though, give her a dress and get a nice perk to fist people with.
