Retrofiting buildings into houses

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 5:40 am

This is a question regarding the first big piece of imagery for FO4: the gas station base

it's seen in the trailer and that first big banner pic

so do you think we will be able to edit existing buildings into homes as a counter to building them from scratch like we've seen in the demo? or maybe more traditional home buying (obliv, syrim, fo3 etc) where you buy/stumble upon a premade house is in as well? i just can't see building a gas station from scratch just to create the illusion of living in a retrofitted gas station. unless that was just for the wastlander vibe of the trailer, and we cant do anything of the sort of course.

if it is possible, what do you think will go into repurposing existing buildings into player homes? what could be turned into a home? gas station? old, capsized ship? collapsed section of highway? a small cave? etc

Suposedly we get to build a spaceship if the news reports on all of this are accurate. so who the heck knows at this point.

If you're suggesting we can build/edit any building/highway/cave etc. in the wasteland, that's not how it works. There's a handful of fixed locations that we can build on, and that's it. Maybe there will be template houses we can use, but apart from that I believe we have to put up every door, every wall, and every window.

I think the writter meant you can build a home in the shape of a space ship.

Anyway OT, no official news, but I would not be surprised, tho I assume a building needs to be within a radius of a housing workbench.

i know that, i mean pre selected retrofit-able buildings LIKE the preselected plots to build that can be made into houses as well

didnt say anywhere 'you can build anything anywhere' in any sources or interviews

didnt really think anyone needed it specified

Don't be angry, just didn't really understand your post. Still a bit confused, actually.

But the way I see it, you can put a bed/mattress and storage space in just about anything you build, and then choose to make that your home.

Though I see what you're saying now. We still don't know what the mechanic is involving where/how other people move into your settlements and where they stay, and whether you can order your companions to stay at a custom-built house. Because you could make anything your own home but if other people move into it and your companions can't be ordered to stay there it sort of defeats the purpose, if you get me.

probably, however building is two parts, one is the house building part where you build an house, this has to be done on an foundation, the second part is putting down everything from furniture to electricity and defenses, this can be put everywhere but probably only in some distance from an building crafting station.

Now making an craftable and movable building crafting station should not be hard. Plenty of mods to do similar stuff in earlier games.

Now the fixed locations are probably selected to avoid issues like having an deathclaw spawn point in your bedroom or you blocking an patrol route for some faction.

Yes this could be exploited, make an arena at the spawn point, put up defenses to deal with an enemy patrol.

I assume that most of the quests for setlements are radiant except perhaps a few.

It might be that you can not run caravans to moded locations like inside an vault.

Worst case you can not get an real settlement with population but an hideout should not be any problems

Peter states that there is no quests tied to the settlements, to ensure it stays purly optional.

not angry, just didn't want this post to turn into an 'actually you can't build anywhere, here's how it works...' thread when that's not the topic at all

already seen it happen to some... a post is vague about a bit of info that's assumed known by all, then people start posting huge chunks describing that bit that was omitted to save space by cutting stuff everyone already knew, and the actual point dies

that bit was left out because everyone knows it and doesnt factor in much here, no other reason

topic's on retrofiting pre-existing buildings into homes if its an option, not how or where new homes can be built... we all get the facts around that

as in: finding a gas station that is predetermined to allow you to set it up as a home AS OPPOSED TO building a home/settlement on a predetermined plot from scratch... and what you think the former will entail since we all get how the from-scratch building works pretty well

sorry for the confusion, that's about as clear as i can get it

yes, I know its no major quests however stuff like caravans or recruiting people probably uses the radiant quest framework.

Hopefully each plot of land, or at least some of them, start pre built, and then you can later tear them down and rebuild as you see fit.

I think this is what is shown in the E3 gameplay actually. I remember watch them take down the building across the road, and iirc there was already a building in place where the crafting station was.

It could've been pre built just for E3 though, so who knows

Technically its no problem placing everything except the actual house everywhere.

I have made mods for this myself in Oblivion and Skyrim.

The house workbench might be an limitation as it looks like put you in an building mode.

This might limit you to areas close to the workbench but you should be able to take funiture and add new from an existing house in the area.

it should also be simple to bypass this restriction with an mod.

Hopefully so. This was one of my favorite things to do in Morrowind. You could...um... evict the current occupants of a building and then use it as your player home. The Dunmer Strongholds were excellent for this!

As for your original question I think that the gas station is like your megaton/ten penny house. A prefab for those who don't want to build their own settlement. Since settlements are optional it only makes sense that Beth gives us a base of operation already built in game.

Calling it now: There will be mods to allow people to build in the most popular/coolest locations regardless if it would even make sense.

I just really want to build a home in a Vault.

This is what I'm excited for really. I don't care where they let us build in the vanilla game, once the creation engine drops I'm sure that will be one of the first things that's changed. Lots of ideas come to mind like boarding up and fortifying an existing building in Boston and a livable vault base as well. There's just room for so many activities

If we get to have a Vault settlement then it'll essentially be first person Fallout Shelter. The overseer mods that would come from that would be epic.
