New repair system speculation

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 3:34 am

So IF there is repair available in FO4 and IF it has been revamped. What would it be like? Would it be more 'hardcoe' where you need to take your weapon to a bench and repair with spare parts/weapons? Personally, I hope the game has something like a weapons maintenance kit that has a set number of charges. So when your gun starts to degrade you can set it up and clean and maintain your gun back to pristine quality.

Anyways, I figured I'd start this thread so we can all speculate and discuss repair in Fallout 4.

There isn't any condition or health stat on any of the weapons and armor we've seen, save for Power Armor. So I'd guess the only thing that degrades normally through use is Power Armor itself, which is a decent drawback if Power Armor is truly as strong as it looks. For everything else, all we know is that we saw a Raider Psycho's chestplate get blown off in the combat reel, and that Pete Hines said they aren't ready to talk about item repair yet. That could mean a lot of things.

One possibility is that weapons don't degrade at all, but armor pieces will break if hit with a strong enough attack; perhaps something specifically set as armor-piercing.

Well Bethesda's sudden silence when questioned about the repair system by PC Gamer seems to allude to the opposite. They did that thing where they give the cookie cutter response "We're not ready to talk about that just yet." Makes me think they overhauled it into something completely different....or got rid of it altogether and are just waiting to break it to us when they have exciting info to release along with it.

It's also easy to reinterpret item repair into crafting and upgrading. That's exactly what happened with Skyrim's shift from Armorer to Smithing. So, we'll still be able to break down weapons and items we find and use those components in our own equipment; that aspect hasn't changed.

There wasn't any armor or weapons health in the videos we sae probably because Bethesda Game Studios don't want to talk about the repair system yet.

Some pcgamer.com employees went to QuakeCon 2015 and talked to Pete Hines and Todd Howard about CND and repair in Fallout 4 and they both said we are not talking about it yet or gave very little details.

They did say we will be getting a visual inspection of weapons in Fallout 4, which let us check if it's rusty and so on.

The more I peruse the forums here, the less I want to know about the specifics. I actually want there to be a little mystery when I click that "Launch Fallout 4" button. If there is a repair system, I really hope that it is a well thought out system instead of the "insta-weapon mush together" we got in previous games. I dunno. I'll find out more on November 10.

I'm not normally a Bethesda naysayer--I can't wait for this game--but I suspect the latter. If there was a weapon repair system there's really no reason for them to be coy about it. I think they're just waiting for the best opportunity for Todd Howard to explain the rationale for its removal.

But I hope I'm wrong. If there is a system I imagine it must involve a workbench/repair bench, rather than repairing on the fly from the inventory screen. But with no sign of any weapon condition stat... It just seems really unlikely.

Besides power armor I don't see anything suggesting item degradation. The only thing I can think of is perhaps there is the possibility of critical failure if you hit something hard enough. I'm thinking it's more likely was removed all together.

Wonder if its less the weapon breaking and more the specific components, with some being more fragile than others. The cathode ray tube in the plasma rifle (very fragile, exposed and made of glass), the focusing lens in the laser rifle (fragile, but protected by the casing), the cylinder of the revolver (rarely needs replacing) etc. With little repair know-how you can just buy the parts and pop them in (as opposed to building them from scratch).

I am just looking forward to seeing what they came up with, the old system with having to get another gun same make and model or close to the same in order to repair a unique weapon that could be a pain sometimes in NV.

I'm thinking we might get a system where the mods that you put on a weapon will be able to take damage and eventually break, but the core weapon will be intact.

I hope that we can still try and use the weapon as is without repairing/removing the broken piece and dealing with the consequences (e.g.: trying to aim through a broken scope renders it nearly impossible to see).

I think a system like this would also make suppressors have durability to them that gets weakened with use (like the later Metal Gear Solid games), as that's kind of the only way to prevent a mod like that from becoming a complete game breaker if you can put it onto most any weapon. Should still have decent HP though.

I think the only way anything in FO4 is going to get MORE complex (or "hardcoe") is via modding....

I was hoping for revised lockpick and hacking mini-games but that would be just icing on the cake if that were so. Repair on the other hand, I feel it needs to be tightened up somehow. It's just not practical carrying around extra gear just to make repairs.

Maybe there is a breakdown feature at a vendor or npc, or perhaps its the player. We bring them the weapons we don't want, they break them down into components, and we repair our weapons with those. That would be cool.

Who knows really. Nothing left but to wait and see.
